Woah, this is beyond pathetic. Isn't supposed that streaming music positively benefit the artists? Some musicians also offer single songs or entire albums for free from their websites, this is often done by low-profile bands who want to increase their share of listeners, how they gonna shut down a site just because someone share a goddamn link? I firmly believe that they are exaggerating.
Maybe it won't be so bad if labels willingly put their music streaming online and allow the links to be shared? I'm sure that wouldn't go against the bill as long ad there are no d/l links being shared.
I saw a video on this on YouTube. First, we have Obama signing that National Defense Authorization Act that gives the president the authority to indefinitely imprison American citizens without a court hearing, both domestically and abroad, and you now you have the government that wants internet censorship. This world getting scary. I'm not hear for SOPA. I don't want the goverment telling me what I should do on the internet.
I also heard they are putting out an Cyber Anti-Bullying Act for people who post nasty comments or threats on someone's Facebook page, Youtube ect. and could you serve time for that.
Are VPNs affected by this ****? Hotspot Shield VPN,, which is based in the US, is my only way of internet access. ISPs here in my country have so slow connection and very high rates.
I don't think people understand the gravity of SOPA. It's a pretty big deal and the fact that it's made it to the point were it is now is a dangerous sign...
and the original poster is right, it could kill ATRL.
People post YouTube videos all the time. YouTube is going to be one of the primary targets for SOPA and PIPA.
Here's the best example I could come up with based on what I learned about it at work...
Say if someone creates a YouTube video, called "**** Stans Say" and they use "Single Ladies" as background music. They are violating the SOPA law. Their claim has to be worth $2,500 for the claim to be considered a felony, but that's nothing. If "Single Ladies" is $1 on iTunes then 2,500 hits would make it a felony.
Since ATRL is an open forum (and even when it gets closed) if someone was to post that video, it's considered facilitation, which is also a felony charge under SOPA. At that point, if noticed, all of ATRL's resources, like Fanity, Google Ad Sense or that nifty button on YouTube that shows that people on ATRL have been talking about this video. Any possible source of revenue for this site is cute off without notice.
When the money stops flowing, the server stops. When the server stops, Ms. Database Error will take over. No more ATRL unless someone is funding it directly.
This Bill has the potential to stop the Internet and tomorrow ATRL will join the fight against it. Tomorrow you will see ATRL protest this bill along with thousands of other sites. I urge everyone to take action now and contact your representative and tell them to vote "NO" on SOPA!
