Lets get back to the countdown, shall we?

Last year's #7: Muse, "Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)"
At first I was like WTF is this? I mean, I was expecting a song that's about in the same league as "Bad Romance" or "Poker Face" but all I got was this plainly written track. Yes it does have some nice meaning and it doesnt take an Einstein or a Shakespeare to realize that, but it certainly lacks that spunk not only lyrically but also in terms of production and melody. However, as it exploded in the charts days after, and also when the video came out, there came an opportunity to give it a listen again. That's when all the appreciation started, probably because the hype already died down that time. And as proof of the appreciation, it spent 19 days at #1 on my countdown and therefore deserves the 7th highest spot on the yearend list.

Last year's #9: Lady GaGa feat. Beyonce, "Telephone"
Not #1, not top three, not even top five. Despite being one of the biggest (or maybe solo) Panic! at the Disco fans in ATRL, I could only put "The Ballad of Mona Lisa" at a decent #6 finish. It was difficult to place this outside of the top 5, but there was just too much competition and I had to consider the overall impact the song has made for the whole year. This is a very strong single. It has the hooks, the Panic! trademark sound, the great metaphors, and it also has a pretty awesome music video to tag along with it. The problem is, the moment it left my countdown (it spent 60 days in the top 10, 20 days of which at the peak), it also got removed from my playlist. Also when the album arrived, it was one of the tracks I would usually skip. I may have overplayed it during its release period. But the good thing about it is that everytime I would shuffle the whole content of my iPod and it appears, there is always renewed liking for the song like I was hearing it for the first time. |
