Ever since last January when What The Hell slowly but surely outsold Hold It Against Me to everyone's shock, there have been arguments about who's doing better with their latest album: Avril or Britney?

So let's settle it. Now that the dust has cleared (Femme Fatale sold 1.5M WW, Goodbye Lullaby did 1.3M) who would you say had the better 2011 (taking pre-release expectations into account)?

Britney. Bigger singles, better album sales. Actual awards.

I would say Britney did better by a hair when just looking at the numbers, but in terms of pre-release expectations Avril did better

Britney by a mile. Avril had a pretty bad 2012.

Then it should be What The Hell vs Hold It Against Me. Britney actually toured, had several hits all over radio all year and sold maybe 50x the amount of records in 2011. There's no comparison at all as a whole. Avril was nothing.

Britney. Avril isn't hardly relevant in some of the biggest music markets in the world.

I'll go with the one who sold over 10 million records + last year, had a top grossing tour, and a couple of awards...just to name a few.

Britney didn't sell a tremendous number of records either. WTH outsold HIAM. TTT did well but not that well (2X platinum thanks to a remix). IWG did poorly compared to its AI. Criminal bombed. None of her songs did very well outside the US.

Britney toured but the tour was plagued with stories of Groupon deals, empty seats and poor performances which only added insult to the injury her image sustained after the 2008 lipsynching controversy. The little promo that she did was also met with media ridicule. True, Avril was sort of a non-entity but she didn't have the press scrutinizing her lack of dancing and singing. You have to look beyond the mere "Britney had a tour, Avril didn't" surface.
