News: Microsoft or Sony To Quit Console Race?

If true, wow. With Wii U guaranteed to launch in 2012, that means it's either going to be Microsoft or Sony. Our take is that it's probably Sony because financially the company would have a tougher time with the huge R&D and manufacturing for yet another new console.

Beyond that, it's easy to speculate that perhaps Sony is working on some major cloud gaming partnership with Gaikai instead of devoting resources to another piece of hardware. We'll bring you more as we hear it!

Sony as a whole is doing badly at the moment, but the Playstation brand would the last thing to be affected by this. It's their healthiest division.

And they've already entered the next handheld generation with the Vita.

Likewise, it'd make no sense for Microsoft to bow out just as the Xbox has begun to explode.

But perhaps they're planning to keep supporting the 360 instead of making a brand new system. They did say that Halo 4 was the beginning of a new trilogy. I always thought it was weird that they wouldn't wait until the next gen to start that.

It only launched 3 weeks ago in one country (a country where the 360 bombed even harder). These kinds of decisions aren't made that quickly.

Sony has sold nearly 400 million game systems since 1995. They stop making Playstations the same day the whole company goes bust.

On the other hand, the Xbox division only account for like 2.5% of Microsoft's total business...

And Wii U is hardly "next gen", graphically and horsepower-wise its behind PS3, and for some things, even Xbox 360.

There will definitely be a PS4. just based on various sources and common sense. Just not announced at E3. It will most likely be the last of the 3 to be released.

Also CES is going on right now and basically every single phone and mobile device they are getting ready to put out during the year will be "Playstation Certified". Playstation is here to stay for the foreseeable future.
