The Moment: In late January, Wiz Khalifa took his hit single, "Black & Yellow," all the way back to his Steel City roots by performing the track before the AFC Championship between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Jets.
Our Reaction: Wiz enjoyed plenty of great moments—both personally and professionally—thanks to the success of "Black & Yellow." And this was the moment the song became a national phenomenon. Not many rappers get to perform their songs at NFL games or sporting events as a whole. So this was definitely a special moment for Wiz and hip-hop as a whole.

The Moment:
In early February, Eminem took part in one of the most expensive Super Bowl commercials of all-time (it cost Chrysler nine million dollars!) by lending his voice and his vocals to an ad for the Chrysler 200 that also put his hometown of Detroit in the spotlight.
Our Reaction: Yo, that commercial cost that much? We guess it cost so much because it was two minutes long. But, this was a great look for Em and for Detroit, too. It's pretty crazy that this guy has gotten to the point where he's not only repping his city through his rhymes but also through national commercials for the whole country and world to see. Who whoulda thought that'd be the case a decade ago?

The Moment: In early June,
Beyonce became the first black woman to headline the Glastonbury Festival. She did it just a few years after her husband Jay-Z caused a huge stir by becoming the first hip-hop act to headline the event.
Our Reaction: Finally! If you didn't think B was an international superstar before this, you knew it after she performed. Glastonbury has typically only accepted rock acts to headline. But now two of the biggest stars in hip-hop and R&B have headlined there within a matter of five years. That ish cray! (we promise—we're leaving that phrase in 2011. Ha!)

The Moment: In early July, Eminem's Recovery album, which was released back in 2010, became the first digital recording ever to surpass a million digital sales.
Our Reaction: Are we supposed to be surprised? It seems like Em breaks a new record with every album that he releases. And Recovery was no different. It is a little surprising that no one had ever done this before. But we're glad he added that distinction to his resume.

The Moment: In late August, Tyler, The Creator bested Big Sean, Foster the People, Kreayshawn, and Wiz Khalifa to take home the Best New Artist award at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards show. After accepting the award from Selena Gomez and Taylor Lautner, Tyler launched into an expletive-filled speech and later collapsed into Kanye West's arms when he stepped off the stage in tears.
Our Reaction: Yeeeeeeeah! Usually, MTV goes with the safe pick here or the one non-rap act ends up taking home the victory. So, we definitely didn't see them honoring Tyler. And yet, there he was on stage, cursing up a storm and showing off a $^%&!#@* of emotion in front of millions of people. Awesome. But, we do have to admit: We were kinda pissed that he didn't take home the "Video of the Year" honors, too, for "Yonkers."

The Moment: In early October, Taylor Swift brought T.I., who had just recently been released from prison, out at one of her concerts in Atlanta and performed his hit single, "Live Ya Life" alongside him. Later, Tip, Nelly, and Young Jeezy posed for a picture backstage at the concert.
Our Reaction: Taylor Swift had a ton of her own "hip-hop moments" this year. This one was our favorite, because: A) We were a little surprised that Taylor aligned herself so closely with Tip, who has obviously had a bunch of legal issues in the past. B) We had no idea "Live Ya Life" was such a hit with the tweens. And, C) We got that ridiculous T.I./Nelly/Jeezy shot out of it.

The Moment: In mid-October, Yelawolf, Slaughterhouse, and Eminem appeared on a cypher during the 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards. That in and of itself could have been one of the moments on this list (that Em verse, my god!). But then Royce Da 5'9" stole the show by inserting the line, "Hi, Rihanna," into his verse several times. The phrase turned into a Twitter trending topic within minutes and later caused Rih-Rih to respond, "Hi @RoyceDa59," on her Twitter account.
Our Reaction: Wow! We still laugh every time we see one of the guys from Slaughterhouse make major noise. As individuals, those guys were ignored for so long that it's good to see them getting their props at things like awards shows. And this "Hi, Rihanna" thing was crazy. Funny what the power of Twitter can do for an artist these days, huh?

The Moment: In mid-October, two young girls named Sophia and Rosie appeared on Ellen after captivating millions of YouTube viewers with a performance of Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass." They performed the song on the show before Nicki surprised them by taking the stage to perform alongside them.
Our Reaction: Nicki. Has. Made. It. Not that we were necessarily doubting her before, but not all of Nicki's music translates well to younger kids and people who aren't necessarily hip-hop fans. So to see a couple of little kids singing "Super Bass" was pretty insane. And it was really cool of Nicki to take the stage with the girls and acknowledge some of her youngest stans.

The Moment: In mid-November, Mac Miller sold almost 145,000 copies of his debut album, Blue Slide Park, and topped the Billboard charts—making him the first artist in 16 years to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard charts without having a major label behind him. Miller remains one of the rap game's most coveted free agents.
Our Reaction: Independent DIY artists reign supreme! That's exactly what we thought when we heard what Mac had done. That kid deserves a lot of credit for proving that hip-hop artists don't need "the machine" to be successful anymore. All they need is a lot of drive, a lot of determination, a lot of Twitter followers, and a little luck and they, too, can make it to the top of the charts.

The Moment: In mid-December, Jay-Z and Kanye West performed their hit single, "N***** In Paris," not once, not twice, but ten times (!) during a Watch The Throne concert at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Some of footage captured during the concert is going to be used in the music video for the song.
Our Reaction: Ten times? A lot of people thought that was excessive. But, think about it this way: Everyone who was at that show can say they helped a couple of the biggest hip-hop artists ever create a video. Pretty cool stuff—and a great moment to help end the year. Now, what does next year have in store for us?
The King of Rap making the list three times and with no album out.who else ?
