Well it does exist but like you said in small doses. Labels buy radio spins, not airplay. They buy like 5 spins for 15,000 $ or something like that. And usually it helps and the radio plays it more and it becomes a hit. But I think they used it for those songs you mentioned but radio never picked it really up.
