Of the 2000s: I think these 3 huge hits are perhaps the best example of songs by black artists that people will instantly call "urban" because of their color.

Rihanna - S.O.S. (Rescue Me)
Sonique - It Feels So Good

Seeing as I doubt either of these charted on the R&B charts, they fit well here.

I'd say all three were definitely pop. But Samantha Mumba's is probably the most pop.

Gotta Tell You is clearly the most poppish, but I chose Rihanna because I think that's just as poppish as that.

Samantha's is the most pop.... Sonique's is more dancish... with all those beats and synthesizers popping up throughout it.... it has that whole dance/electronica feel to it, but not a whole lot...just a little.... Rihanna's is just a hash of Tainted Love with new lyrics... it doesn't sound pop at all... i would consider it....i dunno.... R&B?

Samantha Mumba's was sounds more pop and is the best song on there. Rihanna's "S.O.S. (Rescue Me)" would come in 2nd and Sonique's "It Feels So Good" is definately techno.

I pick Samantha, she has the most poppy sound. Rihanna coming in second, because it sounds more rockish, not pop.

Sonique is def. straight up Dance, Rihanna is more Dancey R&B.

I agree with Kworb. People automatically label pop songs "R&B" because a black person is performing them. Its very racist.
