Google, Facebook, and others planning a "Blackout Day"
Quote:
Big companies including Google, Amazon, Facebook, eBay, Twitter, PayPal, Wikipedia, AOL and others are allegedly in talks to have a conjunct "Blackout Day", a day these companies will have their websites and services offline to raise internet user's awareness towards the danger of S.O.P.A. (abbreviation for Stop Online Piracy Act), a bill that if passed will allow the U.S. government to shut down any website reported for having copyrighted content without a court ruling. Basically, the government will start controlling the internet.
The information about this conjunct action was given out to website Cnet by Markham Erickson, leader of the anti-SOPA organization Net Coalition. Erickson said these companies are in "serious discussions" about the possibility of this joint protest.
Last week, over 40,000 websites took their domains out of GoDaddy after the domain registrar claimed support towards SOPA. Wikipedia was among the websites that left the registrar.
The American Senate will debate the act again on January 24th.
