Why does she always place her fingers to her ear before she does it?
To make sure she's hitting the right pitch/note, a lot of singers do it. Sometimes the music is too loud so they need to do that to able to hear themselves.
Not to sure on Nicole. When she was in the girl group Eden's Crush, one of the girls went into the whistle register and stanipedia claimed it was Nicole.

Aside from the legendary Mariah, my other faves who have that skill are Christina and Kelly... I hope Adele can have that skill, though.
I can assure you that her range of the same 5 notes does not cover the whistle register.
Christina's "What A Girl Wants" performance for the Stripped/Justified tour DVD is the best sounding whistle she's ever done. All those under performances are weak and some of them, I don't think, are even technically in the whistle register.
Sorry gurl, but those aren't whistle notes. F6+ is usually where whistle-capable singers transition into their whistle register, but Christina doesn't possess whistle and so she's just forcing her head voice. That's why she has so little control over it, has to scale up and is flat on a couple of them.

Minnie Riperton by far had the best control of the WHISTLE REGISTERS
Minnie's were incredible and she is the original whistle queen, but Minnie's often tended to just be a long sustained whistle at the end of songs which became jarring after a while. Mariah has just as much control over her whistle register, and is also far more versatile. She can riff, sing words, add vibrato, make her's hard and soft etc. And she integrates it much better into her music. Emotions will always be the best use of the whistle note in song.

Receipts at 3:16. She only ever did one whistle, but her control is actually amazing there and she can/could clearly go higher than D7.
