Just saw it tonight. It comes out next week, but I saw a sneak peek and it's a shame that is wasn't crowded. The movie was fantastic. It's probably one of my favorite movies now. They didn't mention sex, guns (not really), or anything that would make the movie PG-13. They just captured the emotion of Akeelah (KeKe Palmer) and made a wonderful movie out of it. I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't get Oscar noms, especially since the Academy usually skips over these types of movies, even though they are fabulous.
Seriously this movie is SO good. I can't see how you wouldn't like it? It's just about a girl in southern LA which is pretty much an all black neighborhood. Akeelah's dad died when she was young (you figure that out before they tell you) so she is normally discouraged from going to class, or doing well in any subject. The only thing she is awesome at is spelling, and when she finds out that there is a spelling bee coming up, she turns away from the idea, fearing that she may be made fun of because of the thought of her reputation going down. Of course, when her principal makes her do the school spelling bee which was coming up within the week because of her bad grades and attendance rate, she was forced to participate... and won. Then she JUST made it in the district spelling bee, getting her to the regionals, where she would have to be top 3 to make the Nationals, where she would make it and participate to hopefully win the nationals .
That's all I'll give you. If you want to see if she wins the National Spelling Bee, I totally recommend you see this AMAZING movie.
Duh, don't you think I know that? I'm saying it didn't even mention it in this movie at all. And if they did mention it a lot in a harmless movie like this, it would make it a PG-13, that's all.
I'll shoot every person involved in the Oscars if it doesn't get nominated for BP.
At LEAST nominate it for something! Totally worth the $7.50 I spent.
