Discussion: That Awkward Moment When Teachers Talk About Gays

I have so many stories for this. It's so weird.
Totally inspired from another thread, but I think it needs it's own. I'll type mine in a bit.
My stories are so awkward the teachers go all preachy, it's weird, and kids just laugh.

I really hope other people have stories, and I'm not the only one who thinks it's awkward.

For me, it's not really awkward or depending of what is the teacher saying, but usually me and my friends just look at each other and laugh a little

My art teacher, that I had in 6th grade and the first trimester of 8th, randomly was preaching against gays. I was like "WHAT THE **** IS THIS" and the other kids were laughing at him. Miraculously, he still works at the school.

In 7th grade, my Science teacher was teaching about Genus-Species. One kid yelled out, "Like homosexual?" when the teacher said "Homo sapien", and everyone was laughing like Hell. I quit with the kids + some teachers in my school.

I remember when I was in High School, I watched the hot guy of my class have an argument about gay people with a male teacher of mine. The teacher was really liberal and trying to convince the student that there's nothing wrong with being gay but the student was talking about how all gays should be shot.

All this while the only openly gay kid in the whole school was in my class sitting right there.

Thankfully, I have never had a teacher 'express' their opinions or jokes about 'homosexuality'.
At least not with their students.

My French teacher sophomore year, this guy asked if men in France wear perfume and he said it as if he was disgusted (he misheard something), and she went on for ten minutes how gay people are totally fine and there's nothing wrong with them, and society benefits so much from them, how we wouldn't have so many things and professions without them, etc. Everyone looked at the flamboyant gay guy behind me, and I think me too, I was freshly out, a few people knew.

My teacher (who is straight and has a wife) would talk about going to gay clubs with his wife and saying that gays have better music playing. He would try to convince the kids saying "ew" that if you get hit on just say you're not gay and move on..

And then I saw him at a gay club.

I remember back in the ninth grade we had this assembly on HIV/AIDS Awareness and they showed us an old movie about the beginning of the AIDS epidemic and how it first became a hot button issue. And in one one scene they were in a gay locker room or shower and these guys were kissing each other and hugging (VERY PG) and the WHOLE auditorium starts going "Ewwww", "That's gross!", "That's ****ing disgusting!".

Can you imagine being a gay teenager having to sit through that? I was kicked right back into the closet.

When I was in senior year at my high school, my Philosophy teacher was ridiculously homophobic and would frequently bash homosexuals. I wasn't out at the time, and he would attack gay people and use the phrase, "When I say these things to my gay friends, I'm really saving their lives. Because they'll catch AIDS,".

I didn't say anything, but complained to my friends about it. One of them wrote a paper on injustice and cited my example, and the teacher spoke to me about his comment. He ended up talking to him about it, but it didn't seem like he was reprimanded for his comment.

I went to a Catholic high school btw (most teachers were really liberal, but he was an asshole).

Most of the time my teachers just mention it in passing, like to clarify stories about their friends who were same sex couples. Occasionally we have discussions about same sex marriage in my AP Government class, but those always turn out well because everyone in that class is very liberal.

My only bad experience with it was a very conservative teacher discussing The Masque of the Red Death and yiffing on and on about how back in the good ol' days gay meant happy and didn't refer to an "abomination." He probably still gets turned on by women's ankles.

We were like "haha nice try, u're still not cool!"
