Just to check how people across the world perceive these country names. These are the list of pairs of contries that people around me are confused. You can propose other pairs if you can think of ones.



EDIT: In case you are never confused with any of them, just go for the one you've heard of people confused by it the most.

Swaziland / Switzerland

None of these. Luxembourg/Liechtenstein for me.

The names are similar, but that's it. I mean, i know where they are

But I didn't even know Swaziland was a country so I'll go with that one

Australia / Austria

None of them are confusing.

But Netherlands/Holland/Dutch makes me pause for a second sometimes. All 3 are so different.

I used to be confused with Austria / Australia a lot when I was a kid. To be exact, I didn't know that they are different countries. I thought Austria is a nickname for Australia.

I've known some people who get confused with Taiwan/Thailand too, but since I'm from Thailand myself, this is not the case for me.

None of these really confuse me...

The most confusing ones are all of the istans under Russia.

I can recognised Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kahzakstan because of the Asian Games. Once they spun out of Russia, they became new members of Asia, became eligible for Asian Games and won shitloads of medals. Other countries (except China and Japan) are very pressed at them in that sports event.

I can't remember the rest of the Russian spin-outs though.

Taiwan and Thailand.

In spanish sometimes I confuse Suiza (Switzerland) and Suecia (Sweden)

Australia / Austria

I used to always get them mixed up. I'm really into geography now too... I never got confused between the others.
