UK Charts: S.O.S. makes top 5 on downloads alone!
And becomes the second song ever to debut top 10 on the UK Singles chart with JUST downloads ("Crazy" becoming the first from Gnarls Barkley).

Now! and Streets drive market
16 April 2006 - 18:44:13
A combination of The Streets' follow-up to the million-selling A Grand Don't Come For Free and Now! 63's retail debut helped album sales increase by 9.4% last week to reach their fifth highest level of the year, at 2,835,417 (2,791,353 physical sales plus 44,064 downloads), writes Alan Jones.
That is theoretically good news but it WAS the last week before Easter and sales were well down on Easter 2005, when 3,251,171 albums were sold, and Easter 2004, when sales were a stellar 3,363,749. Easter, of course, falls at different times each year and it was three weeks later this year than it was in 2005 - on a direct comparison with the same calendar week (15) in 2005, physical sales last week were up by a massive 28.3%.
Now That's What I Call Music! 63, predictably, made the biggest contribution to the total, selling 191,423 copies. It arrived three weeks later in the year than last year's equivalent Now! 60 set (both were released in Easter week) and, although it was by far the biggest seller of the week, came nowhere near to matching its predecessor's great opening - Now! 60 was only the second album in the series to open north of 300,000 with sparkling first week sales of 302,121.
There's a similarly predictable outcome to the battle for the artist album chart, where The Streets debuts at number one for the first time in his career, in a top three which also contains Massive Attack's hits album and The Kooks fast improving debut set.
The Steets' third album, The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living, sold 71,407 copies to take pole position. His first album Original Pirate Material debuted and peaked at number 12, while follow-up A Grand Don't Come For Free had to settle for a number two debut behind Keane's Hopes And Fears, despite first week sales of 106,327 but reached number one six weeks later with a rather lower sale of 34,413.
Still chasing that elusive third number one album, Massive Attack are number two for the third straight week with Collected: The Best Of Massive Attack. The band, which topped the chart with its last two regular albums Mezzanine (1998) and 100th Window (2003), sold 72,471 copies of Collected three weeks ago, 47,998 a fortnight ago, and 43,175 last week. The album is the Bristol collective's first compilation and although it didn't top the chart, it's got more staying power than 100th Window, which slumped 1-9-16 and, despite its good start, has hitherto sold a modest 209,141 copies.
A fortnight after achieving the extremely rare feat of climbing into the Top 10 of the singles and albums chart simultaneously, Brighton band The Kooks continue to prosper. Their fourth single and first Top 10 hit Naive slips a couple of notches to number seven, but their Inside Out/Outside In album climbs for the sixth week in a row, to reach another new peak. A number nine debut in January, its recent progress reads: 64-58-44-33-9-5-3, while its 12 week sales tally has climbed to 166,130 including 34,814 last week.
With Hayley Westenra's Odyssey album re-entering the chart at number 16 on sales of 5,205, the only other album to register a Top 30 debut came from an artist who has been absent from the list for longer than Wesenra has been alive - Don Williams.
Country legend Williams was, for a time, extremely successful in the UK, racking up a rapid 14 chart albums between 1976 and 1984, although he had just two hit singles - I Recall A Gypsy Woman and You're My Best Friend .Williams hasn't charted since - until this week. Making its debut at number 27 on sales of 12,397, The Definitive Don Williams: His Greatest Hits ties in with the gravel voiced 66 year old's UK leg of his International Farewell Tour, which started in Glasgow on Friday (14th) and finishes 11 May in Manchester.
With Valentine's Day and the variable celebrations of Mother's Day and Easter now included in data for 2005 and 2006, it's possible to see that sales have fallen this year but only slightly, dipping from a year-to-date tally of 39,513,662 at this stage last year to a current physical tally of 39,201,917 - a decline of 0.79%. Downloads were not surveyed last year, but have amounted to 90,961 since being included in data for the first time a fortnight ago.
Meanwhile, this week marks the first anniversary of the inclusion of downloads in singles market data, and thus allows comparisons to be made for the first time. Last week saw physical sales fall week-on-week by 2% to 345,705, and downloads dip 8% to 994,483, making a combined market of 1,340,188. In the same week in 2005, physical sales were 12% higher at 392,882 but downloads were 64.35% lower at 354,620. Overall singles sales were 747,502, meaning last week's market was up by 79.3% over the same week in 2005.
Making the biggest contribution to this week's singles tally and easily defeating an expected challenge from Shayne Ward, Gnarls Barkley's Crazy is number one again.
The first single to spend more than two weeks at number one this year, Crazy enjoys a very comfortable 75.5% majority over its nearest challenger on its third week at the apex, and lifts its cume to 345,101, making it by far the biggest seller of 2006. Notorious B.I.G.'s Nasty Girl follows in second place with sales of 192,332.
Crazy registered a further 118,714 sales last week but misses out on becoming the first single to top CD, download, 12-inch and 7-inch charts simultaneously. It has a lock on the first three with sales of 73,102, 41,662 and 2,071 respectively, but has to settle for second slot on the 7-inch list where sales of 1,879 are far fewer than the 4,579 tally of Hard-Fi's Better Do Better.
A week after smashing Shayne Ward's record for most downloads, Gnarls Barkley deny the X-Factor winner his second number one hit. Instead, the Mancunian has to settle for a number two debut for No Promises, which sold 67,628 copies last week; his debut hit That's My Goal sold 742,180 copies the week it was released last December, spent four weeks at number one in total, and has so far sold 1,051,955 copies. Both singles are on 21-year-old Ward's self-titled debut album, which is released today (17th)
Following in the footsteps of Gnarls Barkley, Rihanna this week becomes the second artist to register a Top 10 hit on the strength of downloads only - well, almost, as in addition to the 15,376 downloads logged for her new single S.O.S. this week, a distribution leak means 45 CDs were also sold. Debuting at number five, it's Rihanna's second Top 10 hit - and when it hits the shops for real today it stands a good chance of matching the number two success of her introductory hit Pon de Replay.
Number 115 last week on downloads, Hard-Fi's Better Do Better vaults to number 14 on sales of 7,864, becoming the fifth Top 20 hit taken from their debut album Stars Of CCTV in less than a year. Of previous Hard-Fi singles, Tied Up Too Tight reached number 15, Hard To Beat number nine, Living For The Weekend number 15 and Cash Machine number 14. Meanwhile the album, which topped the chart in January, bounces 42-34 after selling a further 9,722 copies last week to take its 40 week cume to 622,023.
Finally, arguably one of the most disappointing performers this week is the new Gorillaz single - produced by one-half of the number act Gnarls Barkley, a certain Mr Danger Mouse.
Gorillaz reached the Top 10 with the first three singles from their self-titled 2002 debut album, but only number 33 with fourth single Tomorrow Comes Today. Second album Demon Days has followed a similar path, with three straight Top 10 hits in the form of Feel Good Inc (number two), Dare (number one) and Dirty Harry (number six). The fourth single, pairing Kids With Guns and El Manana debuts at number 27 this week with sales of 4,172.
Reflecting Kids With Guns/El Manana's low bow, the Demon Days album slips 22-25, with sales of 12,599, lifting its cume to 1,472,765 - well in excess of the 809,622 sales of their first album.

Oh i saw that! I thought it had been released as a single so i was a bit dissapointed that it didnt debut higher, hopefully with the single release it will get #1.

SOS sadly won't get to number 1, it doesn't stand a hope in hell of selling 80,000 which it needs to take on Gnarls Barkley Another number 2 for Rihanna then
Expect Gnarls Barkley to be 'inflicted' on you guys in the US soon, over-hyped crap which i can see doing well on the Billboard chart. one of the pair is cee-lo who produced 'Don't Cha' with PCD. Though this sounds nothing like it

Gnarls rules. I really hope Crazy gets big here. an actual original, and different song.

I'm hopeful "SOS" will climb to #1 next week. Gnarls won't be strong in sales as it was this week and for the last few weeks. "Crazy" isn't a bad song though. I don't know why but the familiar duo reminds me of the Fine Young Cannibals, you know, before their commercial days.
I also see that "Dance Dance" has debuted at #26. I think it's only based on downloads because the single is released tomorrow. It's also very hitworthy so I don't know why it can't get in the top 10.
