I still prefer a sales+airplay based chart. a chart based on sales alone is kinda flawed IMO.
actually, I think the other way around is better. airplay displays a song's popularity more. I'm pretty sure if a survey is taken to see which is the song they are currently liking, it would more likely be the number 1 on airplay vs. the number 1 on digital.
The HDS chart and Hot 100 chart tend to be similar at times though.

This. We never really know who's using payola. There's no concrete evidence for these current/recent hits, so there's really no reason for folks on ATRL to claim who's been using it, etc.

How exactly? People buy what they like and radio programmers play what they like. A sales based chart is the way to go. You don't see airplay factored in at the Billboard 200, do you?
Are people really saying WFL isn't really a big smash ? There IS a reason why BBH100 takes into account airplay , since airplay is the main indicator wether a song is a smash or not ! Itunes represents like 5% of a song's real downloads !

I feel like nowadays radio has not even half of the power it used to have.....
Right now VEVO views should count at least for 16.6% of the total. And spotify and last.fm listens should count another 16.6%. Radio another 16.6% and sales 50%

Radio is the best promo artists could have (and I'm not talking only about pop but the multiple radio formats).
i kind of feel what you guys are saying because radio is very biased sometimes...in my book SAIKI should be #1 by now because it gets way more vevo views and its sales are usually above WFL in a given week but for some reason radio refuses to play it while they play the hell out of WFL

This. Radio would not play certain songs because the opinion is that some songs are not "radio-friendly" but yet every now and then those songs become hits. Maybe more of those songs would be hits if they were not boycotted by radio.
You see, when you see a song on top of ITunes you know it is there because most people bought it. If a song is on top of the airplay chart what actually does it tell you how it got there? Obviously the song will be popular with the audience but really more popular than the #2 or #10 song? (those songs might be way higher on iTunes right now)
Anybody downplaying WFL's success is just jealous. The song didn't spend 8 weeks at #1 because of airplay. It topped the Digital Songs charts for countless weeks, which means that for those weeks while it was #1, it was the #1 song in the country rightfully. Sales have been low in the top 10 for months now, despite being a better sales year than last year. If at anything, it means that there is TOO MUCH competition hence, the #1 song isn't selling that much higher than the #2. It's a more competitive chart this year.
