Style over substance; it's pop music's credo. I wish some of you would realize this and quit looking for a purpose in every video. Most videos don't have one, even the ones that are frequently deemed "thought provoking" and come complete with 15 minutes of narrative nonsense.

People didn't begin demanding "meaningful" videos until recent years. Just take a look at many of the popular 80s and 90s videos, which were nothing more than 3-5 minutes of strutting around with dancers or random head shots. Videos from the early 00s weren't exactly meaningful either. Most popstars just did choreography.

Pretty much every pop music video is style over substance. That's not the point. The point is that some pop music videos do style over substance well, and some (like YDO) don't.

I don't disagree with that. At times, YDO is nothing more than a glorified lyric video. I certainly don't love it.

I was only making a general comment in regard to the constant attempts to attach meaning to every video. Some videos just don't have any, and I see nothing wrong with that.

Despite what I sometimes say in SYG to get some of her more idiotic fans riled up, part of me wants to believe that there is in fact some Madonna in Rihanna. And by that I mean the vision to pick out who and what will make things (in this case, a video) work. Of course she'll never reach Madonna's heights (6 albums in, she would have done it by now if she was meant to), but that's why I say some Madonna in her.

Rihanna has had the most popular music in the world since 2005. Others have taken her spot for a couple years, but 6 years later and she still on top in terms of her music's mass WW appeal. She's doing something right in terms of knowing who and what to choose. We can't put the entire credit on her team, because they rep a lot of big music acts and they aren't doing it like Rihanna.

I just don't see any of Madonna's visionary quality in her. She's benefited from having a cool, likable persona that doesn't really turn anyone off and a distinct voice to be laid over the material given to her. I guess I'd be more inclined to agree with you if she'd been able to make her "personal" effort (Rated R) a commercial success as well, but that didn't pan out.

Yeah but she looks like Keri Hilson. I saw a gif used in SYG and I thought that was Keri the whole time until I watched this video and saw it was Rihanna.
