Discussion: Why do stans appreciate flop albums the most?

It is the same with every stanbase...
They always think that the albums that flopped the hardest are the best ones.

The Beyhive think "4" is Beyonce's best album, yet all other Beyonce albums have sold more and won more awards.

"The Army" think that Blackout is her best album, yet it was the only album not to hit no.1 and it destroyed Britney's record of most consecutive no.1 albums

The Monsters appreciate BTW more than The Fame Monster, but we all know that TFM sales and impact is worlds greater than BTW.

The Navy say Rated R is Rihanna's best album, yet Loud and GGGB are the ones that won Grammys, actually Rated R didn't even get nominated for any Grammy

But why is it so? Do stans secretly want to see their faves flop?

Because a lot of the time their flop album that doesn't appeal to the general public is there best work. It isn't the fun pop good beat music that the masses crave, therefore they flop.

The flop albums tend to be the most influential/different from the norm at the time. Each example you bring up exemplifies this. 4 is different. BTW is different, Blackout was revolutionary. Rated R was a complete 180 from what had been released by Rihanna in the past. Simply put, to those who follow these girls' careers quite closely, it can be a special thing to have an album that is so very different and makes your fave that much more unique.

Because the albums that flop aren't generic and and aren't stuff that would generally appeal to the public and that's why the stans admire them. They're usually more personal and of better quality.

Cos all the albums you listed are completely different than the albums them artists have released previously. Their sounded evolved, they took risks, a new music direction for them, etc... that the public didn't warm to because it isn't generic and safe but fans love because they can see the true quality of the albums.

Compared to the original, which was made for $1 million compared to the remake's $35 million budget.

Since some people like to side with critics, they also agree with this.

But how can they have better quality when they get fewer awards than non-flop albums?

The flop albums have to have some critical success to counter the commercial underperformance of the album. When Janet came out with "The Velvet Rope" it was considered a commercial disappointment, but the critics loved it and called it her "masterpiece"..the album went on to sell 3 million copies in the U.S. but it wasn't how her previous albums sold. When you go with your gut and take a risk, it can pay off..I admire artist who sacrifice commercial success for critical acclaim..at least you have something that is going good instead of it being a complete and utter fail.

It's like what everyone else has said: ''flop'' albums are usually the most personal/artistic from said artist and therefore the best. Commercial success doesn't equal quality. A few examples: ''4'' is the worst selling album of Beyonce's career thus far, yet it's her most critically acclaimed. And Teenage Dream had 5 number 1 singles, yet it got plenty of harsh reviews when it was released.
