Since The Prophet has abandoned us, it frees me up to do some side lists. Ryan's video game list has inspired me to create my own, since there is still too much tv and movies to watch before making a decision on those. 2011 was an excellent year for games. I still haven't even played top games like Portal, Assassin's Creed, Rage, and the 360 exclusives. And I'm also not counting the PS3 releases of Mass Effect 2 and Plants Vs Zombies as that would only confuse things further.
10. Mortal Kombat
9. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
8. Pokemon Black
7. Bulletstorm
6. WWE 12
5. Dragon Age 2
4. inFamous 2
3. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
2. Batman: Arkham City
1. Skyrim
PS3 rules. My gamer tag is Goodfishbadfish. Add me if you have a ps3. You, especially Ryan, we need to either go head to head in WWE or whup some chumps together in a tag match. Either way is fine with me.
And as a bonus, there is more music. Since we're in the top 20 it is only gonna be two at a time from now on.
There's no rock in this set! A first, I believe, in chart history. Besides last year when I did one at a time for the entire list.
18.
"21" by Adele
The highest selling album of 2011. The biggest single of 2011. I for one never saw it coming. Blame for that can be attributed to me completely ignoring her debut album "19". This time, ignoring Adele was not an option. And if the worst you can say about an album is that "Rolling In The Deep" is overplayed than you know you've made a mega crossover hit. "Deep" isn't even the best song. "Rumor Has It" "Set Fire To The Rain" and "Someone Like You" all somehow top it. Or maybe its just because I've heard them less....
17.
"Soul Punk" by Patrick Stump
Stump is the lead singer of Fall Out Boy, who are still awesome to this day. Stump departed from the pop punk formula for his solo album opting to do a homage to Michael Jackson instead. The result is the highest ranked pop album of the year! Cause Soul Punk isn't a real genre of music just yet.
The Dark Knight Rises has a new trailer. Too awesome.
Great couple of sets, with nice variety. The Lonely Island are of course the greatest. Girl Talk, great. I remember you told me about the Kasabian album. I need to check that out. Adele, undeniable. Patrick Stump, fantastic! Happy to see that charting so high. That's an album that hasn't gotten the praise it deserves.
If I may please have your attention because we are getting into the top 15 with this update. I said pay attention dammit! Don't make break out the meter stick.
16.
"Divergent Spectrum" by Bassnectar
The King of Dub was rather quiet this year. "Divergent Spectrum" didn't break any new ground in the genre, and he was not everywhere like Skrillex. Yet, even on quiet albums, Bassnectar excels far past the competition, even Skrillex. There isn't a weak spot on the entire album, even the weird stuff like a remix of "Immigraniada" by Gogol Bordello somehow works. Bassnectar also put some singles like "Yes" ft. Datsick that don't appear on any albums.
15.
"Suck It and See" by Arctic Monkeys
Another frequent guest on the best of any year list since whenever "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" first hit the scene. Since then, the Monkeys have gone darker and darker with every album, but never once have shown signs of decline. Their latest, "Suck It and See" starts by giving you the impression that maybe this will be their first stumble. However, around track 5 "Don't Sit Down Because I've Moved Your Chair" this album shifts gears and never slows down. They are touring with The Black Keys next year and I for one think that concert is a must see!
You know things are getting tough to rank when two of my favorites can't even crack the top ten. What will come next?
I hadn't heard anything from that Arctic Monkeys album, so I streamed the YouTube video in your post. That is really great! I need to give that whole album a shot now. That Bassnectar track is pretty cool, too!
These girls can rock out! Apparently this is a super group of some type, but I didn't have any experience with their previous bands. Going into "Wild Flag" without any expectations was perfect, it let me fully enjoy this album in its entirety. So many great guitar riffs across the board. Punk rock record of the year, I think.
13.
"Torches" by Foster The People
Previously I said that Patrick Stump had the highest rated pop album, that was because I do not know how to define Foster The People. Judging only by the first single "Pumped Up Kicks" one would guess they are a hipster indie rock band. Then the rest of the album is electronic. Not sure how to feel about that. The album is so darn catchy and fun it is hard to stay mad, and then you end loving it for what it is. I look forward to your next album, FTP.
Almost at the top ten now, and we're still several days away from the New Year. Wats goin on! I'll stall for time with some silly side lists.
Wild Flag!!!!!!! I could not be happier to see them on your list, O. I adore them. Also happy that you included Tom Scharpling's video for "Romance," in the post, as that video is tremendous.
Foster the People, they certainly had a big year this year. I've liked the songs i've heard from them (were they the band that had Kenny G play with them at SNL? That was cool), so that's a good choice, as well.
I sowwie that I fail at the whole on-going FB convo concept... but I is trying! I wish you had a game we could play togetherrrr, wah.
Batman was on sale yesterday... makes me wish I had tried to get it to check it out. Damn. Oh well, I'll continue to see if anything comes up on Steam. Ooh, you know... you can sign up for Steam via PS3, and then maybe somehow we could play a game that is PS3 and PC? Is that even possible? Okay, done talking about games.
Adele <3 Rumor Has It is probably my favorite from the album as well!
I also forgot about Arctic Monkeys. Ugh, fail.
I am sure someone can make a tally about all the stuff that won't be on my list, lol
