Death at people getting caught up in rhetoric.
Death at people not knowing that the Big Bang theory was proposed by a Catholic priest and is totally compatible with Catholicism.
Death at people not knowing that evolution is compatible with Catholic doctrine as well.
Now I can't speak for other Christian denominations, but I know my own religion inside out. the Bible is extremely allegorical. Those of you that burned it, showed disrespect not only for other peoples beliefs but also for the history of man and for all of those BILLIONS of people that -for one reason or another- placed their faith in it. Congratulations, your mothers must be beeming with pride at having raised such an educated and contributing member of society. Repulsive.
Anyway, the Bible is best used as a moral guide, especially the NT. All of the parables and stories serve to teach a lesson about forgiveness and love. Evidently, this warrants being burned. Mah.
As for all of those harking on about science and proof, remember that proclaiming something as pure fact just because of observations and studies is just as ignorant as proclaiming that mankind descends from Adam and Eve because it was written in the Bible. There's a reason that scientists is the word theory.

I've read it and studied it several times throughout High School and College. From a literary standpoint, the bible is a very fascinating story. It's amazing how the different themes and quotes have been interpreted by different individuals over the years. And the stories about the different religious figures and their connections to modern ways of life are incredible.
With that being said, it still boggles my mind that people actually believe that it really happened.

What about selling your daughter to slavery, killing your daughter for not being a virgin on her wedding night, murder of children, and rape though?

Honestly, I can believe it. People can make themselves believe anything, especially if they practice and enforce it in themselves enough and really want to. It's like mind over matter. The mind is such a powerful tool. I think people choose to believe it because they want to. In my opinion, religion (all religions, the idea of religion in general) is sort of like a security blanket for people. I believe that not having answers to the unknown scares people and they use faith/religion as a way to "explain" the unexplainable. It makes people feel more secure to know that they believe in something, that there is a defining reason for everything that's happening and all of that. Not saying there's anything wrong with that because having faith in something can definitely change your outlook and the way you go about living life. And if it has a positive effect then more power to you. I don't know if I'm articulating well enough but that's how I see it. If you convince yourself that "gods plan" is the reason why someone passed away or you lost your arm in an accident, it makes you feel much better as opposed to just saying "Life sucks and that's why." Just my two cents.

Well, the basis of our culture and our morality are written on that book but they have been evolutionating throughout the centuries, just like Catholicism has.
Abortion and homosexual marriage will be accepted by the Church eventually. Just watch. (you may be dead by then though )

For many people, that's EXACTLY what it is. An easy way of answering life's many unexplainable questions. The only problem with that is, people allow the bible to dictate their actions and train of thought. All personal ideals go out the window in the name of serving God.

No, clumping it together with regular fictional fairy tales, failing to recognize it's significance and over-simplifying things for the sake of feeling superior does.
