Not really. It's like saying you can use the Bayeux Tapestry for an account of the events that occurred at the Battle of Hastings.

Nope. If I wanted to read a fiction book I'd choose something a bit more appealing.

Looks like "God" didn't make this book too easy for his followers to understand = God failed or this book is no more real than Harry Potter.

Its been re-written hundreds of times and is not meant to give facts but guidance, like any other religious book. both of these factors give rise to mis-interpretation.
Besides, yes there are many different sectors of Christianity but they all have the same underlying values and beliefs. ie they all recognise Jesus as God in human form and his teachings.

You say this because it doesn't appeal to your conscience?

I haven't read the whole Bible, by the way. I have read a lot of it. Even though I'm not an active practising Christian I do like to read it for guidance. I helps me through difficult times.

Except a book that leads to so many misinterpretations, and needs tweaking or updating, isn't a very good one for spreading and teaching a religion, is it?

I think that's the beauty of it, though. You can read it and interpret in a way which allows you to understand and gain understanding, support, happiness and/or guidance from it. It makes the religion so much more personal to the person practising it.
I completely agree that a lot of what is said is completely unacceptable, but I understand that, in the context of the time in which it was written, beliefs against homosexuality and about the inferiority of women to men (for example) were the norm. I think we can modernise it in our own way without losing the meaning of it. The problem, I guess, is when extremists take it too far; deciding which rules to follow and which to ignore without giving proper thought to the ideas of the time.

Talking about religion, god and the bible is pointless tbh. EVERYONE (the believers and the non-belivers) are convinced, that they are 100% correct.
Like someone said it is like talking about fairytales - no one can prove that they exist and no one can prove they don't exist. (Actually I am convinced that they don't exist but that is a different story...)

That's your opinion
but again, they all have the same underlying values which are the basis of what you would live by (assuming you live in a Western country)

While many Western values are indeed based on the Abrahamic religions, many are not. Equality between the sexes, the idea that slavery is wrong and acceptance of homosexuality are all values most Westerners hold today that are not found in the Bible.

You shouldn't have to modernise it to include equalism, that's absolutely rubbish, in my opinion.
You might be able to take a step back and separate the true and the false, but the majority of people that read it don't, which is why we still have adults who believe in Adam and Eve.
