See Korean Dream's comparison - the old is just so off and awful. Her current avatar is slick, precise and dynamic - it really does offer a three-dimensional experience. The old ones were so 1-D it wasn't even funny.

I think they still look good. Sure the font was overused, and the animated part had to be small due to the size limits at the time, but they are well designed, even if they're no longer 'cool'. It would be nice to see more avatars like the ones Matty posted. That's taking avatar design to the next level. But right now I see many people with gifs and icons that aren't even scaled properly.
