No no they are not tacky. They show skill and craftmanship. Those boring gifs and static images are just lazy. I'm not saying we need to go back to exactly that style, but why do we put 0 effort into our avatars these days?
Simple images are simplistic and I appreciate that.
Plus a lot of gifs require "skill and craftsmanship", too. Many of the avatars that I've asked people to make for me were combined from multiple parts of a video.

Our avatars (not everyone) take time to make. Today its about the crop and the coloring, and overlays, not so much the design.
