Just because they are extremely popular and resemble a similar style in music, you cannot make that comparison.
The Sex Pistols played their first show to 42 people, and it was history in the making (watch '24 Hour Party People' - in fact, watch it twice, 'cos then you'll realize where you've gone wrong)
The Sex Pistols weren't about huge sales and hype, they were about social commentary.
They were about being outspoken to the government when Margaret Thatcher f--ed up the British economy huge by only being able to afford 3-day working weeks. It was about speaking the mind. It wasn't about "whos the next best British import".
Sorry bud, but your Beatles comparison holds better.
