VEVO paid out more than $100 million in royalties
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...ff-2011-12.DTL
Quote:
It was created almost exactly two years ago by a pair of record companies -- Universal and Sony -- who wanted to make music videos more of a business.
At the time, music videos (including lots of pirated copies) were spread through countless distributors, and the labels and artists had no easy way to track and monetize them.
It has also paid out more than $100 million in royalties to the artists and other content owners who distribute videos through the site.
|
Wall Street Journal a while back reported that VEVO pays about $70,000 for every 10 million VEVO views on VEVO/Youtube/lastfm etc...
Which mean 1 billion VEVO views = $7 million USD check from VEVO.
Sadly, no MV is near that 1 billion mark.

Our relationship with YouTube, we control 100% of the premium video inventory around our content, and what that means is we have the exclusive rights to represent that audience to advertisers at a premium rate, and our ad servers are integrated into every watch page and we're the first call for the ad campaign.
|
It seems that VEVO sells the ads that appear on VEVO videos on Youtube, not youtube.

Hopefully the revenue will continue to grow.

Youtube doesn't pay.
VEVO does.
VEVO gets money from advertisers.
VEVO pays the record labels/artists/publishers. And according to the Wall Street Journal, at a rate of $0.007 per view. Doesn't matter where you watch, as long as you are watching a VEVO video, VEVO will pays.
VEVO also control the ads on Youtube (for VEVO videos).

VEVO is 2 years old.
And according to its CEO, not yet profitable.

BI: You're the #1 music site. Has that translated into a profitable business?
RC: We're on track for profitability in the first half of next year. We have been investing a lot of our money internationally, in terms of growing our business outside of North America and the UK

Yes. Youtube gets a cut of the ad revenue from VEVO videos on Youtube.com
I don't know the percentage. A recent news article stated that VEVO is renegotiating with Youtube regarding this %
Found it

Ahead of a possible initial public offering, music hub Vevo is trying to negotiate a new ad pact with Google’s YouTube, The Post has learned.
Vevo — backed by Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and the Abu Dhabi Media Company — is a standalone Web destination that is also hosted and streamed on YouTube. Vevo gets 65 percent of the ad revenue versus YouTube’s 35 percent.
Vevo, run by CEO Rio Caraeff, is looking to boost its share of ad revenue before it considers going public, which could happen in the next 18 months, according to sources, who confirmed the talks between the two are ongoing.

of VEVO MVs on Youtube.com:
VEVO 65%
Youtube 35%
VEVO now wants a bigger cut.

Top 6 MVs earners:
http://www.youtube.com/charts/videos_views?t=a
Baby
674,337,669 views x $0.007 = $4.72 million USD check from VEVO
On The FLoor
448,506,250 views = $3.14 mil USD
Bad Romance
433,601,533 views = $3.035 mil USD
Waka Waka
429,311,080 views = $3.005 mil USD
Love The Way You Lie = $2.89 mil USD
412,864,376 views
Party Rock Anthem
317,483,933 views = $2.22 mil USD
Just to put it into perspective.
Baby
674,337,669 views x $0.007 = $4.72 million USD check from VEVO
is the equivalent of 5,220,000 $1.29 Itunes downloads (Itunes pay 70%)
Waka Waka
429,311,080 views = $3.005 mil USD
is the equivalent of 3,327,000 of $1.29 Itunes downloads (Itunes pay 70%)
BABY might have sold over 5,220,000 Itunes download worldwide (? maybe not?)
but I don't think Waka Waka sold 3,327,000 Itunes download worldwide.

If you're a youtube partner, Youtube pays around $0.003 per view.
100 million views = $300,000
1 billion views = $3 million USD
VEVO pays much better because the content is "premium" and VEVO sells their own ads on VEVO videos on VEVO.com, Youtube.com etc....
1 billion VEVO views = $7 million USD

Are you signed to Universal? Sony? or EMI? If you're, your MVs will be added. If your indie, it's harder. Read this part of that article:
BI: How do you decide which musical artists are VEVO? Do you run it like a label?
RC: Our emphasis is on premium and quality. We don't really make decisions about which artists are on VEVO, what we do is we filter through our distributors...I mainly mean our licensors.
So, for example, we take all the videos and the artists that come to us through Universal Music, or come to us through Sony Music Group, or come to us through EMI, or any number of independent labels and distributors.
But we're not trying to have all artists in the world. We're not trying to be a place for any band to upload anything. We think that place exists, and it's called YouTube. We're not trying to basically be all things to all people. Our message to the brand community is that our content is premium, our audience is valuable, and in order to maintain that, we're not going into the user generated video space, or the amateur band space.

As for Avril Lavigne. Find her total VEVO views, multiple that by $0.007.
http://www.youtube.com/user/avrillav...?sort=p&view=u
645,984,167 x $0.007 = $4.52 million USD.

I like this. It gives the artists and labels the incentive to really invest in music videos and maybe even make them of better quality to get more views. This will lead to better, more creative, and more music videos overall.
