Problem With US + Music

We as Americans complain about their being too much Pop on radio, then we turn around and say there's too much Rap, then we say there's not enough Rock. Reason why we usually tend to stick to one genre is because we won't let artists change. They can try one little change in their music carrer and end it flopping on Airplay, the Hot 100, etc. Then when they see they're little change caused an eruption in their carrer they go back to what you said we didn't like anymore but yet it gets them top 10 hits all the time.
Main examples:
*Plenty of people said they hated "Check On It", but yet so far it has spent the most weeks @ #1 this year so far on the Hot 100 and still gets lots of play.
*Lots, and I mean lots, say they hate "Laffy Taffy". But the **** still touched #1, lost airplay quick, but touched #1.
I'm bored and tired so please forgive me for my language and hatred against my own fellow Americans and they're musical taste.

. Michael Jackson as an example shows how his songs could have elements of rock, pop, R&B, and others but still be pop at it's core. And be good. Someone who tries that today is often called a poser. If "Beat It" and "Rock With You" were released by the same person today people would freak out.
I still hate Laffy Taffy and Check On It though.

Right now there also seems to be this extreme anti-main stream thing going on. People claim they want more rock on the radio, but they really don't. They would get pissed that whatever they liked became popular and would stop liking it. I think there are a whole lot of people like that, which is why radio is what it is. The people who don't mind main stream are the people who like what's actually on the radio. Therefore, it takes a lot to change it. Sorry. I probably just made no sense, but I'm really tired.

I kinda agree with you on the examples. Yes, I know a lot of people hate COI but yet it has been the most successful song of the year, though it's probably the most undeserving #1 ever. Is this how we wanna end up looking at her solo career....with junk like this? She could get her name off this list if a slow song of hers does as well as her 3 solo #1s which have all been upbeat/dance songs.
I do somewhat disagree on D4L's song even though it is irritating, the catchiness factor makes it slightly less horrible. I do give D4L credit for doing what rap groups don't usually do, and that is reaching #1 even with such a terrible song.
And of course, you can't forget Chris Brown who might be the second coming of Usher and Mario. How do people like him do so well so quickly, yet talented artists who've been around for years struggle? I just don't get it.
When we look at music from the last 5 years, we can definitely see that hip-hop and r&b have been dominating the charts with a pop song topping every now and then. When was the last time a country song or a rock song topped the chart?
This brings me back to my hatred towards Check On It which I still thing is the worst song by a female artist ever made. I'm sorry, but that's my statement and I stickwitit (lol, I made a funny).
Whew, I'm tired.

Laffy Taffy = Worst Song 05' (And maybe 06') But I do like the beat.
Check On It = Allright.
The US is kinda weird like that when it comes to music and the charts.

What bothers me is that everyone is always like "US Charts suck because its all hip-hop and rap" when that is obviously what people want to her. I personally am not the biggest fan of all rap and hip-hop songs but it is still a form of music and just because it isn't liked as much by the rest of the world, doesn't mean anyone should complain. If you want to change the charts, download music legally and call your radio stations and don't complain when your favorite band "sells out" because they're on trl and the radio.

The Billboard Hot 100 reflects what people like NOT what people don't like. I mean how the hell would they do that?

Yeah. On the same subject as Lucy, a lot of people want Top 40 stations to play more than just pop, rap, R&B, and the several dance/electronic one-hit wonders, but it hardly ever happens. Oh, sure, Green Day and Nickelback get played a lot, and they're rock, but come on...I'm talking about heavier bands who occasionally dish out a "ballad" of some sort, along with their more common songs.
The main reason why those bands don't get the recognition they deserve is because pop radio is shunned by most rock fans. It's automatically considered "selling out" if nine inch nails, Tool, or Marilyn Manson were to get added to the playlists of Top 40 stations. I'm not speaking for all of their fans, just the vast majority of them who think it's "wrong" for those bands to get played on pop radio.
Manson and NIN especially have some melodic songs (listen to "In the Shadow of the Valley of Death" from Manson's Holy Wood; "Right Where It Belongs" from NIN's With Teeth, which might actually be the next single.) But they don't HAVE to be melodic, you know. I see those types of bands being played next to Eminem, Kelly Clarkson, Black Eyed Peas, etc. as more exposure, and if the song is #10 or higher on the Alternative chart, why the f‘ck not? NIN's last 2 singles and the current one all went to #1, Tool's "Schism" was huge; it peaked at #2 on both Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock.
It doesn't help that Top 40 stations pretty much have a grudge against hard rock, either. I only remember Limp Bizkit's "My Way" and P.O.D.'s "Youth of the Nation" receiving moderate airplay, maybe some others, but that's it. Papa Roach's "Last Resort" too. Not even Beck's "Girl" made an impact, and it's far from being hard rock.
They just really need to change the music they play. People also need to lighten up about their favorite bands "selling out." I don't know...I hope people see what I'm trying to say or whatever. Heh.

I love this thread. It's funny how we talk about the Hot 100 and such, but only a few artists breakthrough and change the line-up. The usual can be Britney, Xtina, Justin, Kelly, Beyonce, Madonna, Mariah, Nelly, Luda, Missy, Linkin Park, you name it. We as an audience will NEVER allow new artists with substance to pop in unless it can be played over and over again.

You just don't get it do you.
The reason they don't play those types of songs is because
1. Bands like that don't even sell or get airplay to begin with (NIN, Tool) even though I like a few songs
2. The newer heavier bands suck a lot of dick and therefore it doesn't sell because
PEOPLE!
DONT!
WANT!
TO!
HEAR!
IT!
3. Labels dont want to push this kind of trash so therefore most of these crappy "bands", if thats what you even want to call them, are without labels and reduced to selling cds at pot parties
The ****** unheard of bands that you like are equal to ****** rap. The only different is that **** is requested on radio and sells albums because of stupid white kids out there that are too frustrated with mommy and daddy in the suburbs so they buy lame ass **** like 50 cent and Eminem to "rebel". I can personally guarantee the audience of both of those lame asses is close to 70-75% white people atleast. Black people know better. And most fans of people like Korn and others are too busy buying weed and trying to commit suicide every single night to request their crappy songs on radio or buy their albums.
LETS JUST FACE THE F/UCKING FACTS here!
You can be jealous of pop music all you want and piss and moan about it until you lose 100 pounds but at the end of the day people like Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, hell even people I hate like James Blunt make music that you can follow. Music that has a melody and you can actually understand other then
OH MY GOD! MY DAD HIT WHEN I WAS A LITTLE KID! OH MY GOD! NOW I AM IN THIS ROCK GROUP TRYING TO ESCAPE! OH MY GOD! I TRY TO KILL MYSELF EVERY NIGHT! OH MY GOD! WHY WERE THEY SO MEAN TO ME IN HIGH SCHOOL! OH MY GOD
That music is piss, deep down you know and everyone else knows it. And I think thats what kills the most.
The end.

LOL true.
White kids are big on their Hip-Hop, I know from experience. I live on Phony Island (Staten Island) and everybody here is trying to be something they're not. Yet they're racist asses dislike black people when they see them in person. Listening to rap and dressing strictly urban is what they do to have a boost in confidence and feel "cool".

Lots of people want to hear rock. I totally agree with Johnny on this one. People say they hate what's on radio currently, but they would be pissed if what they did like was aired. Bands do just fine without having HUGE hits--espescially now with myspace and other internet sites. Bands can make a middle class living. This used to be impossible, but now that it's possible for a band to live off their money and not be extremely mainstream, I don't see a movement of rock to radio.

The reason music sucks is because it all sounds the same. No one is unique and different anymore. All the pop acts use the same songwriters, most of the rock bands use their songwriters, or if they do write their own music they are writing songs that sounds like the other top bands out there. And most rap and r&b sound the same. There is nothing that is outstanding in any of the music on the radio and MTV today.
You take a band like Aerosmith in the 70s and they wrote songs and became a ground breaking band. Even to this day there is no band out there that can come close to having the same catalogue of songs that Aerosmith has. In fact, Aerosmith's best songs are the songs that were never single.
I say 70s Aerosmith because ever since the 90s Aerosmith have used outside songwriters and have become like every other rock band out there who just try to write songs to be "hits." Up until their Honkin' On Bobo album Aerosmith was boring and just doing what every other band is doing. Music in today's world is stagnent and all sounds the same.
There are some good bands out there still...you just have to look in your local clubs to find them. I mean I love Ashlee Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Aly and AJ, and lots of other pop acts that I am complaining about but the fact is none of these people would have ever made it if they were in the 70s and had to earn their fame like bands like Aerosmith did by going out and touring and building your fan base by your live shows.
But the problem also is radio...radio is all based on payola. Record labels pay clear channel to get their artists played on heavy rotation. This pretty much shuts out local and new up and coming acts out of getting any kind of radio play. It's because all radio stations are controled by Clearchannel which is why no matter where you are in the country you will hear the same 20 songs on the radio every hour.
In the 70s radio was local and it was easier for new bands to get airplay. Sure the bands label or management might throw the DJs some coke or pot to get their song played but it wasn't as bad as things are now.
