It's hard to say. "Umbrella" was the true launching pad for her career—it turned her into a legitimate pop star. I know she had some hits before, so maybe she could have continued on making music, but I doubt she ever would have become one of the major girls.

lets think this through (bear with me).

If there was no re-release we wouldn't have disturbia or take a bow so she may not have been as big by the rated r era. but that era flopped anyway (apart from Rude Boy) and she emerged from it unscathed. so basically, she'd probably be in the same position except without the masterpiece umbrella.

Yes, but it's also the biggest hit she's ever had. "Umbrella" smashing was what launched her into global superstar status. If it hadn't been so successful, who knows where her career would have gone after?
