Before the iTunes era, yes they did. Not singles help to promote songs. More artists rely on singles to fill seats on their tours. Not too many focus on actual album sales unless the album flops big time.

In pop, not really. Unfortunately, there are a lot of artists who can sell singles extremely well, but hardly shift any albums. Promo, radio + hype are the key factors.

Adele has gotten tons of promotion from various outlets though. Grey's Anatomy, Glee, 90210, One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, Football games, SYTYCD, The Voice, Idol, X-Factor, SNL, Films, cable television shows, Apple commercials, and tons of other uses within other forms of media. Adele has been getting tons of free promotion since her album dropped.

Yes, but only to a certain extent. There are many more necessary factors that take part in a well-selling album.
