Of course. What's Whitney these days? The one-hit wonder from the security guard movie, crackhead, washed up, my land in Israel has-been.. and Mariah, while ridiculed from time to time, is still viewed as a singer.
Whitney and Mariah are the Gaga and Ke$ha of their time. Whitney has 1 (and only one) great song that everybody knows, loves and remember and Mariah has a diverse variety of hits (several).
I don't think she was trying to follow trends at all at first (at least on Butterfly.) She was honestly just making the music that she wanted to, and there was no need for her to try to be "Black", as she had all the success in the world by that point. If she really wanted to be more successful she would've kept making the music she'd been doing for 6 years by that point as she had absolutely NOTHING to gain from alienating a huge portion of her fanbase. She's probably made one of the biggest artistic shifts ever. But I do think that deciding to move away from that image was the best career and personal decision she ever made.

I agree Whitney has had more impact.
But, Mariah didn't really start following trends. Butterfly is noted as one of the albums that lifted the pop/hiphop fusion movement.
Mariah Carey's only generic albums really were Rainbow, Glitter.
Mariah took a trend that was already popular in R&B/Hip-Hop and brought it to pop, collaborating with rappers. Even MJ's "Jam" features Heavy D, and that was a pop record. She expanded on something that was already done. She was just the most successful with the pop/hip-hop fusion, so I guess that's why she gets credit for it.
Why do you girls even respond to Alexz and his trolling posts? Even the die hard Mariah fans in here acknowledge Whitney's impact and has not said one bad thing to make their arguments weak, so there is nothing more to say.
