That's likely done intentionally
This song and Superman are both about John Mayer, written when they were still together.
Superman and soldiers are both heroic figures, so it's a translation of the fact that Mayer was her hero/ knight in shining armor. Then he became the villain in Dear John. Then she said "The battle's in your hands now, but I would lay my armor down if you'd say you'd rather love than fight" in The Story of Us, meaning that she wants to make peace.
