You're right, they are excuses.

It doesn't matter if her music is "there", that's the most nonsensical argument I've heard. There are plenty of artists that have albums out but can't sell either due to their label or their lack of one. What do you want her to do, book performances for herself?
RCA didn't let her release the album, or the singles she wanted to, nor did they back her up properly when she gave in. She made this clear way before we even had an idea of how well What the Hell would do.
