NO, you
cannot make the assumption that just because it won BP, that the film itself should've won more awards/the most amount of awards of the ceremony (as well as from the other ceremonies). It wouldn't suprise me if the voters were split in their choices between these 2 movies. (possibly as well with the others) There was a lot of tough and worthy competition this year. I'd also like to bring up the point that BBM won just as many Oscars tonight as Crash did, one of which includes best director. And It wouldn't suprise me to look in past awards shows and see that "Movie A" won best picture, while "Movie B" took home the most awards of the night.
Next, to me, you don't have actual evidance nor a reasonable cause to make the accusation of the academy being under "liberal guilt" and/or "homophobia." (Or at least not just yet.)
Personally, I think if there was some homophobia within the Academy, the movie wouldn't have been nominated in the first place. Also I could make your "liberal guilt" accusation towards the golden globes giving BBM Best Drama Pic (or whatever it recieved), over the other nominees it was against. (or if BBM happend to win the bp oscar this year) I could make that statement for the factor that the film dealt with homosexual themes, which has been much looked down upon in history - (With reference to hate crimes, Matthew Shepard, etc.), and now people are starting to feel that guilt, as well as seeing the view of a gay man, this turns around for a vote.
Now, I know a lot of people such as yourself hated the movie. To me, Crash had a powerfully-better story, as well as heavier and more prominant themes then that of the other nominees, most of which a lot of us can relate to. On top of that, for me, the film was way more entertaining than BBM. I seriously doubt there was an negative agenda for BBM not winning BP.
But then again, you nor I cannot speak for the 100s/1000s of minds who voted this year. Every mind is different.
I think the majority of the voting academy felt some of the same ideas/thoughts I had about Crash, and that's why it won.
Now that I've typed up this novel, and my fingers are getting sore, answer this:
Why did you personally dislike Crash?
