It most definitely IS generic. And I thought so at the time. It sounds the same as Just Dance.

It wouldn't have been popular in the US if Katy Perry, Rihanna and Britney Spears hadn't popularized electropop 6 months beforehand with Hot N Cold, Disturbia and Womanizer.

It wasn't innovative at all. It was just jumping on the current musical trends at the time.

Timbaland and Nelly Furtado are the ones probably most responsible for dance pop being popular now. Also songs like Ayo Technology by 50 Cent/Justin Timberlake (which Poker Face rips off tbh), Smack That by Akon/Eminem, Low by Flo Rida/T-Pain and many others also helped popularize dance music.

Anybody who was following chart music throughout the decade will realize that. RnB and hip hop were dominating, and gradually, artists like Ne-Yo, Timbaland, Akon, etc. were adding dance influences into their songs. Even as early as 2006, electropop songs such as SOS by Rihanna were able to get to #1 on Billboard. Poker Face was quite late on the scene in reality. So no, it's not innovative, and it is generic imo.

It's a nice song I like it. Yea, it's over rated, but generic? I hear this word thrown around a lot as if it's a bad thing. How do you define generic?

For me, a generic song is something that sound like a lot of other songs that came before it.

I live in the UK though, so I grew up listening to artists such as S Club 7, Eiffel 65, Britney Spears, Aqua, Steps, Vengaboys, etc.

I was listening to songs like these back in 1997-2002, which are essentially no different to Poker Face (just with different lyrics, and no crazy lady).

So Poker Face, Bad Romance, Disturbia, etc. seem VERY generic to me, because I've heard it 100 times before with different lyrics during the late 90's and the 00's.

These songs got to #1 in the UK when I was a kid, and they're just as dancy as Poker Face, so it's nothing new to me:

It's exactly the same as all those huge hits from 10 years ago. And it's so boring. It just goes da da da da da all the way through, and a bit slower in the chorus (and has the drums from Ayo Technology thrown in).
