I'm pretty sure that most of the organizations that help underprivileged people in this manner are church-related. It's just a longstanding tradition in the church. Helping out your fellow man is one of the first things you learn in religious life, and I'll give them that, they really do back that up 100%. Plus, I don't think a person in need would turn down a helping hand because they happen to have opposing views. I know I wouldn't.
