The X axis (horizontal line) is basically social issues. The further left you are on the bare, the more you want things to change/progress. The further right you are the more you want things to either stay the same or go back to the way it was before.
The Y axis (vertical line) is more about the size of the government. The higher up on the Y axis you are the more okay you are with a big government, regulation, and/or welfare. The lower you are on the Y axis the more you want a small government, deregulation, and less well fare.

There are plenty of other factors that could influence that... but yea supporting gay marriage would push you to the left.
