It's already established that Rihanna's albums sell well in the long run, that's she's a big WW star and not a flash in the pan. No one is disputing that. All albums that are full of hits, like Teenage Dream or Animal, end up selling well in the end.
The question is, after 6 albums, 11 #1s, Madonna-tying singles records and the biggest radio takeover of anyone in the last 5 years, why can't her name still not open her albums to big numbers in the world's #1 market?
Maybe because fans want to see what she offers later? I have no idea. But I also don't see why it's such a big deal.
Nickelback will be the top post-Black Friday debut from today and will battle Michael Buble for the #1 album next Tuesday. Drake, in his second week, could be a spoiler, but seems a long shot as of today. Here's a bigger than a breadbox look at this week's key new releases. I'll update with more fine-tuned projections tomorrow.
Like that Slate article said, Rihanna is just a one hit wonder that keeps on coming back. Nobody cares for her, she's made little to no impact on pop culture, and her stan-base is non-existant.
Lol @ these comments. Chris Brown debuted higher and ended up not going platinum. Selena debuted with 66K and ended up selling 800K. Y'all are making a big deal out of nothing with first week sales. It's not like she's flopping with her albums. All go platinum.
The whole "she can't deliver album numbers - she can't open big" is just ********, to be quite frankly. After 6 hugely succesfull albums, y'all really believe that BS?
