I didn't see her as a villain either. Just an incredibly damaged woman who had no idea what was right or wrong. She had no sense of morality or clue of the human condition and that was her problem. She was horrible uneducated and she defined herself by a man. A sick man who preferred children over her. I will also give kudos to Mariah for her scene as well. The way she reacted was
extremely believable and how she was sickened to even let that woman touch her and how shell shocked she was hit home for me especially. But then Monique's character just wanted her to magically fix everything and that was just impossible.

To be honest... I don't think the role of Mary was much of stretch for Monique. I mean, she kinda acts like that. The only part she really shined as a actress was at the end when she was crying.

I disagree completely. This was a completely different person on screen to what we know from the Parkers (never watched it obsessively, more or less just background music when visiting family). I can't even front and say she didn't bring it and that this wasn't a huge departure from her because it was. Mary and the role of Ma Parker were completely different from each other and were only "alike" in that they were both black women from urban cities.
