Evidentley one of the best teen movies of the past decade (though it was released in the 90's), but it was tainted by the two ****** sequals.
Tell me about the four leading actors/tresses and how the ending is all kinds of amazing. And get into how Bittersweet Symphony made the final scene, such a great film from start to finish.
good movie but a lot of things were corny and left unexplained...the cocaine flying out of the cross...really? If it wasn't in slo-mo it'd be more epic but still
and let's not forget how Reese Witherspoon's character magically gets possession of ryan phillippe's car after his death
The soundtrack is my favourite ever with that of The Craft. So many good bands discovered thanks to this movie.
There were tons of teen movies in the late 90s but I think this one sticks out the best and has aged quite well.
It was different, edgier and more provocative. But you still cared about the characters even if some of them were a bit cartoonish.
Besides it inspired shows like Gossip Girls, for example.
And Sarah was unbelievable in that movie. The All My Children fans were already aware she could play such a heinous role but since the show is not well known around the world, it was a shock for all the foreign fans.
Some memorable quotes:
Kathryn:
Quote:
"Everybody loves me, and I intend to keep it that way."
"Introduce her to your world of sex, drugs and...what else do you do?"
"Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer."
"When I'm through with Cecile, she'll be the premiere tramp of the New York area."
"God forbid I exude confidence and enjoy sex! Do you think I relish the fact that I have to act like Mary Sunshine 24/7 so I can be considered a lady? I'm the Marcia-****ing-Brady of the Upper East Side, and sometimes I want to kill myself."
"People don't change over night, you and I are two of a kind."
"You're just a toy, Sebastian. A little toy I like to play with."
"I think it's the saddest thing I ever heard. [Sips champagne] Tastes good."
Sebastian:
Quote:
"We've done some pretty ****ed up **** in our time but this... I mean, we're destroying an innocent girl. You do realize that?"
"I didn't know it was asshole day at the Valmont house."
"I'm sick of sleeping with these insipid Manhattan debutantes. Nothing shocks them anymore."
"[Letter to Annette] Dear Annette, I don't know what I could possibly say that would rectify the harm I've caused you. The truth of the matter is that being with you was the only time I have ever been happy. My whole life has been a joke. I prided myself on taking joy in others' misery. Well, it finally backfired. I succeed in hurting the first person I ever loved. Enclosed is my most prized possession. My journal. For a long time I considered it my trophy. A sordid collection of my conquests. If you really want to know the truth then please read it. No more lies. Please give me another chance. I'm a wreck without you."
"You spend all your time preaching about waiting for love. Well here it is. Right in front of you, and you're going to turn your back on it. So I guess we're just ****ed. I'll move on. But you are going to have to live the rest of your life knowing that you've turned your back on love. And that makes you a hypocrite. Have a nice life".
A true classic. Sarah Michelle Gellar is perfection! Iconic Soundtrack. And the end is one of the best ever. Kathryn is talking in front of her school and then when she's pushing up the door while the chorus kicks in...orgasmic!
I agree, this movie is fantastic. I remember watching it when I was in elementary school with my older cousin and I was so intrigued by all the sexual themes.
I haven't seen it in years--never seen the sequels--but I'd like to watch it sometime soon.

Don;t watch the sequals. They even get lessor actors/acresses to play the same characters from this one.
