Kreayshawn lyrics "offensive" according to a College Student
Kreayshawn was not allowed to perform at a North-East School Catholic school, Providence College, located in Rhode Island yesterday night. The performance was part of a North-East college tour which included Kreayshawn and an indie band named Neon Indian.
I attend this school, and I was really looking forward to the performance. At about 7 PM, the night before the perofrmance, several students were informed that the school wouldn't allow her to perform. I looked into the situtation more and found out that someone from a Muticultural Student group had complained to the president about her "offensive" lyrics.
Many believe that this person was offended because Kreayshawn supposedly used the "N" word within her lyrics and were offended because she is white, which is a false accusation. I was also told that this person may have complained about her saying the word "hoe" in a song, where she refers to her friend as "hoe".
I was completely fired up about this when I found out, and I still am unsure on how to make people aware of what actually happened. It is freedom of expression and an art form no matter if you consider her to be an artist or not.

Of course, but it's the fact that some idiot complained about it for no reason. It's also a performance however, so the concept of Freedom of Speech really comes into play

It's a Catholic school. I'm really not surprised at all.
Their website describes them as: "Committed to fostering academic excellence through the sciences and humanities, the College provides a variety of opportunities for intellectual, social, moral, and spiritual growth in a supportive environment."

I know what you mean, trust me I attend the school. But it's the fact that someone from a Multicultural Student group decided to complain about it made the school, which is a conservative WHITE school, feel pressured to agree that this person from a MINORITY group was offended.
Many schools now need to focus on diversity so it's a priority for schools like mine to listen to their "minority" students. But when it comes to an incident like this, it's complete ********.

Tell me this. Because it is Catholic, students who attended the school who are adults and who want to attend and pay to see her are not able to because she uses profanity?
It's a performance. Not a political activist going against the School's Mission.

So you think because the majority aren't directly offended by the lyrics, it shouldn't matter? You keep saying 'no reason' but the reason is because people are offended. End of.
Look at what Sats said, thats why the performance was cancelled.

Freedom of speech protects individuals from censorship by the government, not each other. In the case of your college, since its a private institution, it can actually ban whatever speech it wants.

They don't have an ACTUAL reason to be offended, that's my main point. That is where my argument lies.
And how is Gucci Gucci not using "freedom of speech"? It's an artistic expression no matter how much respect you have towards the message.

Freedom of Speech isn't for artistic expression dumbass, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.
You have already said WHY they are offended in the OP

And why shouldn't it be? Freedom of speech protects all speech except libel, slander, obscenity and incitement to commit a crime. Artistic expression has always been a huge part of that, especially in the much more culturally conservative mid-20th century.

.... It's a performance. If a professor can use it, so can a performance that's is paid for by students.
Most of you really don't know how a Catholic College works. It's a college, not a middle/high school.
