Discussion: Metacritic: Is it that influential to you?

I wanna discuss Metacritic or better yet, the critics.

I just recommended some music to a member here and the replied by posting a link to the artist's metacritic page and a No thanks. So I had to persuade him more and he eventually gave in.

But the critics opinion is very popular here in ATRL as you see this case everyday:

- Does the critics matter in choosing who to listen to or your fave?
- Is the critics' opinion that important to you?
- Do you actually read the reviews or just look at scores

Like what you like. Critics are humans and have (biased) opinions like everyone else. They get paid to give their thoughts. That's the only difference. It's as simple as that.

I couldn't care less about critics' opinion

They usually have different opinions than I do, and it's not like they will determine my taste on music. If I like or dislike something, it will be due to what I feel about that music, not what others think. Critics opinions are overrated, people think they are more important than they actually are.

The only time I take a critic's opinion into serious consideration when checking out music is if I know their tastes and opinions are quite similar to mine. Kind of the same way I'll use a friend's recommendation in music, because our tastes are in sync. But aside from that, I don't place a great importance on critical reviews. They're just opinions, not stone cold facts.

Judging critical acclaim based on the scores on Metacritic is as stupid as deciding that something is good or bad based on how well it sold. It's just a case of stans resorting to numbers to argue the merits of their faves, yet again.

I never read reviews before I listen to an album it biases you to their opinion at least a little bit. I like to read them after I've already heard an album enough times to decide what I like about it though so where our opinions differ and what perspective they as somebody in the industry has on the albums but it doesn't influence how much I enjoy an album its just an interesting read.

If it gets critical acclaim, it's usually a pretty good album, but I can't trust that an album that got a mixed response to be "meh." I have to listen to it because you never know about those.

Anyways, nope. It shouldn't be important to anyone, but I will bring up scores in an argument if I need to.

I've never payed attention to critics, and I'll never understand why people on here try to bring up metacritic scores when in a stan war...it's just another human beings opinion on music, nothing more, nothing less, their opinion is no more valid than mine or yours, you like what you hear, or you don't.

Metacritic helps when I choose to listen to a new album. Albums usually don't get critical acclaim for nothing.

Of course I don't change my opinions according to them. It would be ridiculous.

But the common problem with Metacritic is that the scores can have the broadest range. Like if an album is reviewed by 4 critics and let's say it got 3 80's and a 0. People checking for that album would see it as an average album which has a score of 60 when we know it was just one review that messed it up.

So are you like the person I stated in the OP? If I recommended some music to you, would you run to go to metacritic to get some assurance

I am always wondering what critics are saying about the new single/album of my faves, but I'm not going to let them dictate my opinion on the song/album. Take Chris Brown's "Graffiti" for example, it's my 2nd favourite album ever, and yet it only got 37 (?) on metacritic.
