Like others have said, she writes and co-writes for herself and others, decides what she wants on her albums or to release. She left two major record deals before joining Capitol because they didn't follow through with what she wanted to do.
Everyone knows she was a Christian artist before she decided to go pop. She decided to go pop on her own because she wanted too. Growing up her parents were strict fundies, so she never really got the chance to experience pop culture. Part of that is why she decided to change career paths. I remember she said the first time she heard a song by Queen (wasn't allowed to listen to it) it changed her entire perspective on things.

Yeah, I can see where you are coming from. My points aren't set in stone. It's just my perception that they changed their sounds to reach a wider audience. And I am impressed that Katy actually is still involved in her music. She could have easily just let others write for her but she didn't. That gives her an authenticity that some other acts will never have.

You can say that about every pop star. They all have features that add to their star power and garner envy from other people.

No one that exists in this industry today is truly "ugly" so that isn't an excuse. Yeah she does, so what? Whats wrong with being happy and proud of your body, not being shy about it? Your making it out that all she has going for her, when in fact, it is the smallest factor.

Beyonce is more known for her music, ****** movies and raping the television with all those damn commercials.... we know her as megastar because she keeps her private life private like any REAL celebrity should. The only reason you know Gaga is because she's a fame ***** looking for attention in EVERY thing that she does.

Sis, why are you SO mad? You wanna talk about it?

And for this I shall defend Katy and agree with you completely.

Ok well I'm going to use Kylie as an example. At the time she debuted, she was probably the most manufactured popstar on the market, but as time went on she started to realize her position. She got sick of it, left once her contract was fulfilled, and signed to Deconstruction Records. She had FULL (and I mean FULL) control of her music. She was 100% in control. Obviously, this was the lowest point in her career. After two records on Deconstruction, Kylie went to Parlophone. This is actually my favorite label of hers because they "manufacture" her a little bit but she still has quite a bit of control. It's a very healthy mix.

If you are signed to a major label then yes, you are manufactured because they pump millions into your career looking for an even bigger profit. It doesn't matter if you are Alicia Keys or Coldplay or Rihanna.

Noone is exempt from those allegations other than Adele. Beyonce, Gaga, Rihanna, Katy, Ke$ha, Rihanna have all changed images and musical direction from when they started. They all do it willingly to succeed. None are forced like puppets.

Why do people only single out Katy for her looks?
They all use their sex appeal to sell

I didn't say it only applied to Katy Perry, but if you made all of the pop gerls unattractive who do you think would bite the bullet first? Katy is a decent song writer and singer at best. She also tends to be a very sloppy performer live, so it's not like she has A LOT to fall back on. Hell, the video for one of her biggest hit songs wouldn't even exist if it weren't for her face and body.

Then is it fair or remotely appropriate for him/her to critique it?

I absolutely believe that Katy and Rih have been forced to change their image at the risk of contract termination. And K$...let's not.

Katy is manufactured and once U admit it the better. She does not have control over the songs that are released from her album, her record label does. She did not leave those two record label U speak of, she was dropped. Katy just wanted to be famous and her Gospel music wasnt gettin her their fast enough, thats why she changed her whole look/sound over night.

|
Lies. Nicki has only released one album since she's become big. She was arguably not even that big until Super Bass, so lets wait until her next album before you say she didn't take advantage of the opportunity.

If you don't think the label had anything to do with that, then that's on you. All of that was not on her own. And I never said anyone was exempt from those allegations.
