Competition is something we see everywhere in our lives. We see it our schools, our sports, OUR MUSIC industry, our television industry, & everything else. Every country has an element of competition. Countries have fought wars over territories since the beginning of time; are these not just bigger, more deadly competitions to see who can fight the most to get the land? It's like two fighters - & whoever wins gets the trophy.
Would the world be more peaceful without it? It could either be much better , or much worse. No matter how one looks at it, competition leads to great incentive. Would the music industry be as dynamic without competition? Television? Sports? It can never be known how the world would progress not only in recreational aspects, but governmental & geographical aspects, without incentive. Incentive can come in any form - any type of "prize" or goal is one. The world obviously wouldn't be the same. The members of this site wouldn't have their stan wars without the competitive chart nature. The incentive is that #1 smash that sells millions WW, & the smash album.
My personal answer is that while competition goes too far, it is a necessary part of life. It gives people better drive & determination. It should be balanced & more friendly though.
Competition is pretty vital life. Like you said, the economy can't function without it. Democracy and the free Market wouldn't exist. In fact, without competition lifeforms would not exist.

The competition in the music industry really makes people want to work even harder. Though people may say they're competing with themselves their actually lying to themselves, there's atleast one person you're competing against to be better than.
Then again, the constant competition for relevancy in, say, the the music industry leads to generic sounding songs. The book Different by Youngme Moon is actually an intriguing read regarding how in an effort to be competitive and innovative, companies tend to look exactly the same.
But greed and competition are partners in crime. The airline industry, the American railway industry, and yes - the music industry - for example, are all victims, and consumers have paid dearly for it.
