Good opporunity to share my story too.
that happened once with my dad , he recieved an email from someone telling him that he just won a lottery from some charity programme and your email wre chosen and bla bla . he called them and they were in south africa ,they told him in order to recieve the money you should have an attorney for this because it's a huge amount about million dollars and we are about to send it outside the country, he said okay ..and the next day they asked him to send about 3500 $ and give out some private bank information , I just told him to check their website ,we went to the website and everything looked so real and they did have a charity programme and they give prizes for some arts .anyways we went to the contact page and got their telephone # , we called him and asked them about the lottery and guess what! ,the first sentence the lady said was :" PLEASE NOOOOO DO NOT SEND ANY THING AND DONT CONTACT THEM AT ALL, those people are using our company name and they do send scams to people in their emails ,many people fell in the trap and they can use your bank information in illegal transactions ,we tried to stop them but we are unable to reach them " ..we were like OMFG .
I know it's kinda naive but that scam wasn't ordinary ,they sounded so serious and they sent us some stuff about the attorney that looked so real through the fax. But thanks God I was being smart for once.
. But you're right, people can copy numbers anywhere which is why I don't like using cards in situations where it's not a machine doing the automatic reading. As for South Africa, there are also many scammers from Nigeria or using Nigeria on eBay, tons so much that it's become a well known trend and the latest hot spot is Singapore and people being as xenophobic as they are here in the UK take that to mean the whole country, and associated ones because they think the people are the same, are rotten. Like you get all these people putting down the Chinese sellers and calling them scammers, fraudsters, selling cheap or fake goods and anything that comes from there has to be a rip off when it's just not true. Much of our products come from there and are good quality and yes some of the sellers do use fee avoidance tactics but on the whole many of them are value for money sellers, the only problem with that is you don't know if the people making hte goods are getting a fair deal but that's the ame with big companies too who keep most of it for profit and keep their buying price as low as possible but the selling price the complete opposite. Hence, it's the same with sellers here, some are good, some are bad, some are more likely to be fake then others, it's just a shame that some ruin it for the rest and many make wide sweeping assumptions from it.
