The pop girls might get those record breaking number one and top 10 hits, but Thriller's album sales, for example, remain untouched. And album sales > single sales.

Charts are boring these days.

Too bad - charts-wise - Beyonce decided to record a quality album instead of a a more commercial one, because yall know how crazy it is to have some of the pop girls leading the chart for more than a few weeks, and Beyonce is the only capable of such thing.

Here's hoping for Countdown and End of Time success.

Why? If the public, who these artists are selling to, is buying the song to allow it to reach that point, wouldn't that make it more fair? Especially considering the longevity and selling 3.5-5m+ singles a piece.

Katy Perry and Rihanna are the obvious targets of this article, but the general criticisms can be applied to just about everyone who's currently relevant in the industry. So, while it's easier to make an example of Katy Perry and Rihanna because they're tying or surpassing the records set by the greats, it doesn't change the fact that in terms of providing top 10 singles, the digital era has been very giving to Britney, Gaga, Ke$ha, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Beyonce (disregarding 4) alike.

I don't think he's saying that it is unfair, but the fact that Katy has had strong airplay AND sales kinda makes this article irrelevant to a degree. It's not just one week where it shot up based on strong sales and then fell down never to be seen again. As long as you have enough points to make it to #1, then it's "fair." But to use Katy as a main point (it's not just talking about Katy) is dumb.

Articles like this are extremely laughable. Not even because of the Rihanna shade, but because people actually believe that just because there are a few terrible artists/songs out on the radio, that all music is garbage now.

What needs to be done about the charts? Should we ban any pretty faced female artist from charting just to please somebody over the age of 30 who likely listens to nothing but 80s/rock music? The industry has definitely changed over the last few years, and while I do agree with a couple of points that they made in the article, I feel that they are extremely delusional. Look beyond the "garbage" and you will find some great music currently charting on all Billboard charts.

Dumb article. Basically it's saying, "album sales are on a downswing, while we are experiencing changes in the way the Hot 100 is shaped", with a lot of bitching thrown in here and there.

It's not really desperate. Her album is selling, her tour is doing well..might as well capitalize.
