Taylor Swift featured in The New Yorker
The New Yorker is a very respected magazine, so i think its a quite a big indicator of your relevance.

Quote:
ABSTRACT: PROFILE of Taylor Swift. Swift is sometimes called a twenty-one-year-old 2.0—the girl next door, but with a superior talent set. While many young stars have a programmed, slightly robotic affect, she radiates unjaded sincerity no matter how contrived the situation. Swift’s aura of innocence is not an act, exactly, but it can occasionally belie the scale of her success. In the past five years, she has sold more than twenty million albums—more than any other musician. And, in an era of illegal downloading, fans buy her music online, too. Swift has sold more than twenty-five million digital tracks, surpassing any other country singer, and she holds the Guinness World Records for the fastest-selling digital album, for “Speak Now.” Her concerts, which pack both stadiums and arenas, regularly bring in some $750,000 a night. These feats are all the more impressive because Swift writes her own material—a rarity for a country singer, but especially unusual for a teen star. Swift has also won the approval of people in the music industry, from Neil Young to Dolly Parton to the rock critic Robert Christgau. Like Parton, Swift writes autobiographical songs, a technique that, in the Internet era, is also a clever marketing device. After “Speak Now,” was released, last fall, Swift became known for writing about her celebrity boyfriends: the “Twilight” actor Taylor Lautner, the Disney star Joe Jonas, the singer John Mayer. Swift is tolerant of her fans’ interest in her love life, as she is of gawkers who approach her in the street. “It’s human nature!” she said. Swift doesn’t drink or go to clubs, and she has avoided not just the trip to rehab that marked the coming of age of the former Disney star Demi Lovato but also the sudden transition to darker, sexier material characteristic of former teeny boppers like Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears. At home, Swift spends most of her off time with band members, friends, and family. Swift approaches her career with the seriousness of a C.E.O. Every two years, she puts out an album, for which she writes about forty songs. She composes by singing melodies onto her iPhone as voice memos, and writing down lyrics in the “Notes” section. Tells about Swift’s childhood in Pennsylvania and her parents’ decision to move to Nashville so that she could pursue her music career. Discusses her endorsements and products, including a line of greeting cards and a perfume. Describes a Swift concert in Detroit.

How can she be so successful, but irrelevant at the same time? I've always found her and her music cute, but it's not gonna work for much longer. Isn't she like 20?

21 actually. What is not gonna work? Progressing with time? Because that is exactly, what she has been doing. Gave "Speak Now" a listen? That **** is so much more mature than "Fearless".
Like Stefani lyrics were something to write home about.... And she is older than Taylor.

But How come? I though Recovery and 21 were the only 2 albums to sell over million digital copies?
Great Artical

What does Lady Gaga have to do with this thread? I don't see her writing immature teeny-pop. He didn't even attack Taylor.
And yeah, Speak Now is more mature + the music is more complicated. Innocent, Sparks Fly, Better Than Revenge, Never Grow Up for examples.

Come on. "Hair"? They both have their share of crap. I hate "Speak Now" for example". And they both have a lot of meaningful/well-crafted songs.
Strongly disagree with Josh that she needs to grow or change something...because she is doing it naturally.

How is she irrelevant?
Everyone knows who she is and she's the angel of the industry. She pretty much has a flawless image and despite what her detractors here ands wherever else say, critics don't seem to agree with the idea that she's childish. She has an extremely loyal fanbase in a loyal genre and, for anyone who thinks her sound hasn't changed, please listen to her first album and then her third. They are immensely different.
As for singing about love, it's the same **** Adele and a million other artists sing about and people don't see it childish in that context. Taylor is seen as childish by you because she was 16 when she blew up, but now she's older and even more respected and successful and you'll have to deal.
She has the third biggest opening sales week in history.
Fearless had one of the longest runs at #1 in history of the US music chart.
She had the most radio spins of any artist in the US for 2009 and 2010.
She sold the most albums of any artist in the US in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
Who cares if she's "local"? She's local because country music is, for the most part, local. That doesn't change the fact that her critical acclaim is huge and her power in the United States is so large each of her past 3 albums has sold more than the Trinity put together this time around.. Hell, Fearless has sold more than 21 and BTW put together. It's sold more than Born This Way, Loud, Femme Fatale, 4, Goodbye Lullaby and Teenage Dream put together. She's incredibly relevant. Speak Now sold more in its first 5 weeks than Born This Way, Loud and Teenage Dream put together, even with Gaga's monstrous opening.

Fair enough. I just don't get why you had to bring up Gaga, Josh didn't even bash or drag Taylor.

She's not respected, not even with whatever number of Grammys she has She's just the cute girl on TV that everyone still thinks is 15, even though I really haven't seen her anywhere in a long time at all now that I think about it. Her perfect innocent girl shtick is getting tired, specially since she stopped looking like a 16 year old a long time ago.
Like I said, she's beyond successful but she hasn't left a mark at all. She could be replaced any day, and the general public doesn't check for her repetitive and boring ass anymore (Maybe some of them still do, but not nearly as much as when she blew up. Give them 2 years more to grow up though). 17 year old ****s don't want songs about crying all night for not having enough confidence to talk with a guy, they want to get drunk and make out with guys listening to generic dance pop, and that's why she's irrelevant beyond her remaining fan base which is probably mostly made up of over-16-year-old "losers" and a few 12 year old girls that have sisters that used to listen to her.
I don't check for her that's why I wouldn't ever bother listening to her probably corny and predictable album, but I'm sure if she had had a relevant growth as an artist I would have noticed. The bitch is still stuck in her 16s and doesn't realize she's a hot 21-year-old woman and her cute formula is eventually let her down even with the amazing album sales country music has in the US. Until then.

They ARE.
Also, you can't be "successful" and "irrelevant" at the same time, at least in Taylor's case.

Taylor makes better albums than your faves. Your argument is really stupid because you haven't listened Speak Now. It just..doesn't make sense. So bye

what is your basis from this? just because she isn't well-liked in ATRL doesn't mean she isn't respected by the music industry (which is more important than some forum filled with delusional stans)

Well if she could be replaced THAT easily, then why does she continue to have a career when she could have been replaced a long time ago

So labeling an artist as "irrelevant" isn't a form of insult?

No, it isn't. How old are you? 10? I wouldn't be surprised.

I was talking about her image and attitude beyond music, mostly... But yeah, her music too. It's ok though, one day Tay Tay will be crowned queen of the world and all your dreams will come true sweetie

I just don't understand how her image is not relevant. While other artists have more vocal fanbases, her fanbase is clearly the most powerful commercial fanbase in the United States. In fact, no one else is even close. Keep in mind that before Born This Way, Taylor Swift easily held the record for the fastest to #1 on iTunes. Her power is immense; her fans just aren't obnoxious outside of music releases. Her tour is highly successful and she is the single greatest selling and radio power in the United States over the past four years. You may see her as a child, but as a result of her being a country artist, she has a much older fanbase than the average "relevant" pop artist here. The fact is, her image is absolutely flawless. She's never had a public ****-up that was her fault. She's seen as an angel transitioning into adulthood and is so far from irrelevance that I'm not even sure how you can claim such a thing.
I understand that it may suck that she stomps Gaga's album sales into the ground while garnering more critical acclaim and maintaining a more positive image in the eyes of America, but it's how things are.

Whoever call Taylor irrelevant is delusional: She is selling albums ans singles like hot cake. She is selling out Arenas and won the most important grammy award.
