Discussion: Why do you stan?

I'm not asking why you stan for your fave, rather why do stan in the first place? It's quite common to stan on the internet, but most people wouldn't behave the same way in the real world. I think most people stan to fill a void in their lives... Whatever that may pertain to.

Do you know where the term comes from?
Most people may casually follow celebrities, but they're not obsessed with them. Stans are by their definition.

To quote Madonna and myself ( ), people stan b/c they get a thrill out of living vicariously through their fave. People have always idolized stars so it's nothing new or too out of the ordinary, but on the internet it's taken to sometimes alarming extremes. These glamorous, famous, beautiful (in most cases ), larger-than-life women are living the dream that their stans crave but will never get...so by the association of stanning, they get some taste of that dream.
When I first came here I was so surprised to read things like "Britney stans must be so proud that 3 debuted at #1." I was taken aback: proud of someone else's accomplishment who doesn't know you exist? But then I realized that stanning = associating yourself so closely with that someone else that their accomplishments become your own. It definitely comes from a place of not being happy with some part of your own life and latching on to someone else's life/accomplishments.

That's the same conclusion I've came to.
The girls who argue for pages on end about how this artist ***** on that artist are CLEARLY compensating for something missing in there personal lives. After a while it seems like some stans are arguing about their favorite artist's accomplishment as if they bragging about their own.
There's nothing wrong with some playful shade here and there, but going to the extreme of trying to "expose" someone, or making threats all because they said something negative about an artist you like is clear indication of stanning going to far.

This is true for some cases but not all. I have a happy life outside the internet & I'm secure enough in myself to live my own life. You can be happy for someone without envying their life. While being content with my own accomplishments. Stanning for me is just supporting a artist you really like and defending them for kiii and laughs. It shouldn't be that serious. I don't t request songs and do all that other ****. That's doing too much.

Real life all i think and talk about is Eskimo Joe so oc I stan for them bc they are always on my mind, and they make me very happy.
with Rihanna dunno ive always been obsessed with her and it just comes out more online bc theirs others that stan for rihanna.
but i wouldnt call them hardcore stan
back in 05 with Evermore before i had interent i worship them so hard everyone in my school knew me for liking evermore, all my friends got tired of me talking, in class all i did was watch their videos, and when they all said they died just to shut me up. i got a loooooot worst i failed every class, now thats a STAN...i cant explain how bad it was.
so im not a huge stan for singers anymore bc of the reason. (though in getting that way for Eskimo joe, i made 3 avatars yesterday)

^^^ This. I love my faves, but I don't "stan" for them (I'll jokingly act like one every now and then, though), and I never understood why some people seem to take it so seriously, as though they're actually getting paid to stan.
The sane, likeable stans on here, I don't even personally consider them stans because the term has far more negative connotations for me than positive ones.

This would also explain why stans sometimes use the same coping mechanisms to deal with disappointment as they would to deal with real life circumstances.

I honestly beliece that for some of the stans on here, bragging about your fav's single charting or how much money they make is an indirect way of being able to brag about yourself.
They follow these people SO closely, if they accomplish something, whether it be Youtube views or their amount of followers on Twitter, it's an accomplishment for the stan as well.

F@ggot sports.
We align our dream teams, set up the brackets, track the shows and watch as it all unfolds over the season.

I think some people are looking way too far in the subject than necessary. Music stans are no different than the overzealous professional sports fans. They constantly evaluate the talent of their favorite team, follow them wherever they go (out of state, country, continent and for some...a different hemisphere), heckle and trash talk the competition, keeps track of statics of individuals, makes fun of opposition, get arrested for going overboard with harassment and such.
People brush super sports fans off as passionate people when it comes to their favorite teams and players, but music fans are to be looked no differently. They're both the same! The difference between the two types of "stanning" are the demographics each type tends to attract. Music stanning comes with more females and gays, whereas sports tend to attract hetero males and a bit of females as well. The way people argue about artists here, I hear that about football and basketball ALL the time with family and friends.
