Fashion's most famous aficionado, music star Kanye West, turned pro on Saturday with a luxurious hard-edged women's collection that bucked all the stereotypes about celebrity designers.
West has been a front-row fixture at fashion shows for years, but industry insiders had greeted news that he was planning to launch a line of his own with a more than hefty dose of skepticism and plenty of barbed quips about how it would surely be Lindsay Lohan's leggings line all over again.
So, it was with slightly humbled wonder that the fashion editors, stylists and journalists hand-picked to attend Saturday's late-night spring-summer 2012 show greeted the sophisticated, highly designed looks on the catwalk.
Sure, West didn't reinvent the wheel: You could see the influence of established designers — many of shows he frequented over the years. There was a bit of Balmain in the short, sex-drenched dresses and some Givenchy in the gothic, bondage-y leather jackets and skirts, for example.
But luxed-up streetwear elements, like hooded jackets made in a mosaic of crocodile skins, gave the collection a unique voice of its own.
The specifics of project remained foggy: The extent of West's involvement in the actual design remained unclear, as did the identities of those on his design team. But West's emotional attachment to the brand was clear.
Speaking to reporters after the show, the seasoned performer kept repeating "I'm so scared, I'm so nervous.
"The biggest conversation I hope I can end tonight is whole 'celebrity designer' thing," he said once he'd managed to collect himself. "That's the biggest hurdle when you want to get amazing people to work for you."
Another challenge, he added, was figuring out who to work with. The fashion industry is notoriously opaque and often inscrutable for outsiders, even ones as well connected as him.
Celebrities (R&B singer Ciara), designers (Joseph Altuzarra, Alexander Wang and Olivier Theyskens) and celebrity designers (the Olsen twins) turned out for West's show, which was hands-down THE event on Paris' spring-summer 2012 calendar.
Ciara, defying the stifling weather in a fur stole, said "he did a great job. I walked away from this show feeling like I would love to wear this line. There is so much in it that's right up my alley.
"Especially since for me, it's so cool to see someone come from our music world and do something like this. It's really hard," she said a backstage interview.
U.S. designer Jeremy Scott concurred.
"Everyone probably thought it was going to be another like Jennifer Lopez's Macy's line and it's not, it's really clear it's not," said Scott, who's known for his kooky, colorful designs. "Kanye has impeccable taste and you see his taste level is up there. He's a fan of design across the board. I have five-hour long conversations with him all the time about everything because he's so obsessed, and I think we got a little bit of an insight into his mind there."
Held in a high school in southern Paris, Saturday's show drew a thick crowd of star-struck celebrity watchers who snapped their cell phone cameras at literally anything that moved. Some of the students who board at the school watched the guests file in from the other side of what looked like old-school prison bars and begged passers-by their invitations as souvenirs.

I'll just say that it ***** all over the Balenciaga collection for S/S 2012, and leave it at that.

Ok collection, he had a good cast.
Contrary to what that articles says, Givenchy was THE event of the season.

Kanye West Fetes Runway Debut
By KATYA FOREMAN and JOELLE DIDERICH
PARIS — Lindsay Lohan, who has road-tested the celebrity fashion show experience at Emanuel Ungaro — and crashed — was in a supportive mood Saturday night after Kanye West made his Paris Fashion Week debut.
“It’s really bold and amazing what he’s doing. I’m a huge Kanye West fan,” she enthused.
Lohan was among a raucous crowd — including Dean and Dan Caten, Bar Refaeli, Leigh Lezark, Ellen von Unwerth, Karlie Kloss, Anja Rubik and Jared Leto — who gathered at the party West threw for himself at new Paris hot spot Club Silencio.
Hovering by the bar, singer Sky Ferreira was full of praise after attending the show. “It was really cool. It reminded me of high school, with all the name chains,” she said.
Chanel Iman, who flew over from New York to be in the show, clamored to get the singer’s attention as guests swarmed around him. “Hey Kanye, look at my bag, it’s like a necklace,” Iman yelled, holding up her twinkling Swarovski-encrusted Chanel handbag for his appraisal. “He’s a real charmer,” she said. “I think he’s very smart, he really goes for it. He always likes the fly projects.”
Jeremy Scott said he spent hours on the phone with West discussing every topic under the sun. “This is no J.Lo basics line,” the designer said. “I adore him and I think that he is such a passionate and genuine artist in every sense of the word.”
West basked in the attention. “I’m feeling good,” he beamed. As the music kicked off, Jourdan Dunn leapt on stage and wowed guests with her hip-hop moves.
Initially obscured by the throng of revelers, West grabbed a microphone and launched into a stream-of-consciousness, obscenity-laced tirade. After thanking his team and industry figures including Scott and Olivier Theyskens for their presence, he laid into his skeptics.
“Thank you for anybody that didn’t believe, because they motivated us to break our boundaries,” he said.
“We don’t know what the reviews will be, we don’t know what they will say, but I got a chance to go to Italy and feel those fabrics. I begged Louis Vuitton to let me do more shoes after my shoes sold out in two weeks, and they did not. I begged Nike, I begged this company to let me do it. And I took out motherf---ing loans to get the best models, to get the best designers, to get the best venue. I gave you everything that I had.
“This is my first collection. Please be easy. Please give me a chance to grow. This is not some celebrity s---. I don’t f--- with celebrities. I f--- with the creatives in this room, the amazing people who spend every day of their life trying to make the world a more beautiful place.
“The amount of people that tried to get me a celebrity f---ing deal. They said, ‘You need to do boot-cut jeans, or you won’t sell.’ Shut the f--- up ! Or Hedi Slimane in the motherf---ing Mercer, sitting with me, saying, ‘Stop giving them your ideas, Kanye. Do your own thing.’ Hedi Slimane! To feel so frustrated. And I thank anybody who came to this party, everybody who supported, everybody who believed, because people thought it was a joke, and maybe people still do, but I can only grow from this point,” he concluded.
And with that, his DJ segued into Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tenderness.”

Yay I love what he had to say at the end of the show!
I'm sure he'll work endlessly to have a better second collection

When I reviewed the Dw by Kanye West Spring 2012 collection I ended it by saying, “Will celebrities wear this collection? Most definitely.”
I hate to gloat, but it looks like I was right.
Despite critics panning the collection, a 3rd look from the Dw by Kanye West Spring 2012 collection makes an appearance on the red carpet since it was presented just 3 days ago.
I saw Anna Dello Russo wearing this plunging black dress at the Alexander McQueen Spring 2012 presentation yesterday evening.
The Editor-at-Large for Vogue Nippon even accessorized with the ‘Yeezy’ gold nameplate necklace and a pair of the Giuseppe Zanotti heels created especially for the show.
Even though Anna and I aren’t besties, I will admit she does look really good in this dress.
