Discussion: What is bullying to you?

There have been so many discussions about this recently and I notice a lot of people saying that something isn't bullying then others fighting that it is and it is serious. Some people here seem to brush it off and some really worrying for the victims.
So what is bullying to you? Should it be taken seriously or should kids 'grow a thicker skin'? Do you think all kids should be treated the same or should the mental state of some kids due to illness, trouble at home etc etc be taken into consideration and for you what constitutes cyber bullying?

You guys may not agree with me, but I believe that bullying is a part of life. Every single person has been bullied at some point in their life; whether its in school, workplace, college etc.

It's all subjective. I mean, laughing at someone calling the teacher "mum" is where I think kid's have to grow a thicker skin. Bullying someone because of a medical condition? That's not on. It all depends on the severity of the reason why the kids are being bullied (or adults, for that matter) and what extent the bullying is being taken. Other circumstances that affect someone's life has to be taken into consideration, too. If the person who called the teacher "mum" had recently lost their mother due to illness etc, then bullying isn't acceptable. Bullying shouldn't happen at all, but in most cases it is tolerable and doesn't really impact people's lives to the extent of self harm and beyond.
As I said, bullying is extremely subjective.

Agreed with this.
Some kids say alot of things that a parent should tell a child to ignore but when things get physical the child shouldn't have to deal with it. The school and the parents should be involved right away.

Bullying should definitely be taken seriously. There are some occasions where yes...people should grow a thicker skin and get over it, but if it gets to a certain point where it's consistent and you can see the person being bullied is really hurting then extreme measures should be taken.

I knew so many kids in public school that got bullied and beat up on a regular basis. They were too embarrassed to tell their parents or teachers. That why no one ever gets involved, because its a silent issue. Teachers and parents need to establish a level of trust and confidence with their kids so that they will come forward when something like this happens.

There's the kind of bullying most of us have experienced.
And there is a kind of bullying that's just going to far.
And of course it depends on the people involved. What some think is "mocking" feels like harassment to others.
Communication and awareness are keys, I guess.

Bullying is an attitude that normally comes out when there is a group of people interacting with each other. The fact that the strongest person tends to be the leader of a group is because he/she infuses a sense of fear, usually misunderstood with respect, towards the other members of the group.

I agree, however, that bullying has gone way too far, especially on schools. I'm convinced that one of ther reasons is because parents are spending less and less quality time with their children (e.g. poor communication of ideas, meager interactivity activities with the whole family such as excursions or picnics) leading these children to find physical, verbal and/or emotional agression towards weaker children as a way to liberate their frustrations, making them feel better and more comfortable with themselves.

i think it depends on the kid's personality, if they're bullyable....
some people look for those kinda people to bully and laugh at with thier friends
and NO... not everybody gets bullied to the point where they wanna kill themselves

This is an interesting topic.
In general, I think kids have become too sensitive and need to grow a thicker skin. Bullying builds character, and kids should learn to let certain things bounce off them. The only power a bully has over you is the power you give him/her and quite frankly, that kid is gonna end up mopping floors at McDonalds in a few years so does his opinion of you really matter?
Its also been my experience that bullies will back off as soon as you retaliate. One good comeback and you humiliate him/her in front of all his/her friends. That'll shut them up reeeeaaaaallll fast.
Of course there is a limit as to how far it can go...

Putting sorry at the end doesn't make it any less of an insult, we both know you don't mean it and since there's something called freedom of speech i won't even care to elaborate since it's my Opinion and i don't care what you think Plus it's the Obvious truth and all i said was what the previous people said only with more emphasis and more of my own opinion. You just Bullied me and called me a Douche, i passed the test since i couldn't care less what you said and you don't see me wanting to kill myself over it

Say what you will, but bullying is not a test. And to imply the people who kill themselves are cowards, is very idiotic of you. And again, sorry.

To me, Bullying is repeated acts of cruelty and aggression towards someone for no good reason to the point they are scared to do regular things like walk home from school or go to the store.

Pseudo-psychological ******** tbh. If anyone ever tells you bullying is a new thing, they are either lying intentionally or a moron. It's easy to put on rose-tainted glasses when reminiscing about the past, but really alot more is done now to prevent bullying and help victims than say 50 years ago.
