I'm interning as a Recruiting Assistant for Corporate Recruiter at a staffing firm out here. It's a nice opportunity to build some experience and bulk up my resume. It also guarantees me a full time position wherever I move to for grad school, where they'll pay for some of my school, but not much.
I enjoy the position, but I am constantly on the telephone screening applicants for job openings in the Southeastern portion of the United States. There's never a dull moment in my office because I work with a bunch of characters and alumni of my university, which did help me get the job. Gotta love the LSU community! It does get tedious after awhile, I look over about 200 resumes in one day and quite a bit of cover letters as well.

It's tough! From experience with employment staffing, what makes it hard to find jobs these days are relevant work experience and extensive education background. About 60% of the job openings I assisted my supervisor with are requesting years of relevant work experience and a Master's in the field.
For example, this petroleum company in Houston, TX sought us out to post job openings for their company and oversee the entire application process. Two hundred people applied for the "Communications Operator" position. Everyone without at least three years of experience and a M.A./M.S. listed on their resume/cv, their applications were pushed aside and were emailed a complimentary "Unfortunately, this position has been filled/closed. We will retain your candidate file in our database and may inform you of job openings in the future."
It's tough, but what most recommend to current college students, aggressively search for internships to network and build experience next to your name. It's all about what sets you apart from the many other applicants.
It's depressing for me to have to throw out some submissions by recent graduates searching for employment. Entry Level positions are the hardest to come by and especially if you have no experience. Company's prefer to employee someone with the experience and capacity to hit the ground running instead of enlisting outside services to properly train the new workers.

My issue is that due to health reasons I have to take a year out before college but I need a job to support myself. Having been in full time education as well as multiple choirs, sports team, debate clubs etc I have never had a job before. The first is the hardest to get. It really sucks.

Lucky bitch. I'd die for the employee discount. Over here though they literally only hire people with a foreign accent.

I guess I'll post my review on Starbucks
Company: Starbucks
Employed Date - Finish Date: Feb 2010 - Dec 2010
Discount and Perks: Free drinks before your shift, breaks, and after your shift. One free lb of coffee every week (value is like $15) or one tin of tea ($10). Discount 30% (or 40%) on merchandise items/food if I remember correctly.
Pay rate: Minimum wage is Canada is $10.25, and Starbucks start rate is $10.35
Reason for leaving/termination: Left for school
Pros: Most Starbucks I know they're very chill. We're suppose to discard "expired" food every night, but depending on who you work with, they just tell you to take it home. It's good if you're living on a budget. I remember taking like 20 breakfast sausage sandwiches home
Cons: Bitchy customers And the Starbucks golden rule "customer is always right". I knew coming to the job I would just give customers whatever they want, **** the arguement. But it's easier said than done. This customer drank all their smoothie and told me they want a refund because they didn't like it. I told him "But you drank it all..." He yelled at me, I got in trouble by my manager, and my manager told me "customer is always right". And one time, this girl asked the price for a cup, and there was no price tag on it so my co-worker said she didn't know. The customer started screaming, and my manager told the customer to just keep the cup.
Additional comments: Fun job overall. If any question just post. Oh -- and my manager said Starbucks is usually hiring the "super go-lucky happy" type of person. That's why there's lots of gays working there . I went into the interview being all "OMG HI!!!" and got the job. Also, if you're the stingy type of person, who agrees on fairness, don't bother applying here. Customer is always right... literally.

The never had a job thing is really going to hurt you if you're seeking a career type of job. Some of my friends aren't happy right now with themselves. They are fresh out of school and have been unemployed for months and has taken it's toll on them psychologically and emotionally. Some had to settle for jobs that seem like a complete waste to them, such as a retail rep at a department store. Basically jobs that doesn't even require a college degree.
Hang in there and if the need is immediate, don't be afraid to settle for a small job to pay the bills till you're able to find better or go back to school. Go to your university and have the Career Services staff overlook your resume and cover letter. Those services are typically free to students and recent alumni of the institution. ALWAYS travel with a resume because you never know what opportunity may pop up.
I got my current job by bumping into my current supervisor at a school function and we got to talking and I mentioned my interests. She asked me if I had a resume on me and I had one in my big purse and she called me the next day for an interview. Spontaneity is amazing! Keep your head up Bea, something will pop up.

I am a Software Engineer, graduated 2 years ago and currently on my 3rd job. I feel fortunate because in the IT field, there are plenty of job opportunities and career growth. Companies will do anything to retain their employees because one can easily find a better company to work for so they often go out of their ways to retain employees. Salaries are amazing too!

I'm looking for Christmas Temp work to at least give me some references when it comes to looking for full time employment. I'm not too worried though, I still have college ahead of me as well as the fact that I'm planning on moving to Minnesota with my boyfriend where I will have no issue getting a decent job to put me through school.
I need the job now to get me there though. The job market here is worse than the states at the moment. My Mom is INCREDIBLY well qualified and even she can't find a job at the moment.

Yeah, we're taught to love our customer, start a relationship with them, talk to them, remember their drinks by heart, etc. It's a fun job, because the customers we developed a relationship with would always come in, bring us cake, cookies, etc.

I worked at Cineplex too. The managers there get ****** pay (my friend is a treasurer there and does pay roll, and the pay is just ). Free movies is definitley worth it, they're like $12.50 now, and if you wanna see it in imax it's $17.00+.
