Tyler Perry tops Forbes' list of highest paid men in Hollywood, but not everyone is a fan of his work. Many, particularly, int he black community have been staunchly critical of his films. One of Tyler's loudest critics, Spike Lee, expressed his distaste for Perry's films describing them as "coonery and buffoonery".
So, do you think Tyler Perry's films are in good fun and shouldn't be so heavily criticized or is he painting a displeasing picture of the Black community and should reevaluate his work?
Honestly I really despise how some feel that the black community has to make all of our entertainment abnormally strict & politically correct in order to promote some image of black people that'll get ignored by anyone who's truly prejudiced anyway. Let a coon breathe. ****.
HOWEVER, Tyler Perry's work is 80% trash. He must be stopped in some capacity. He's terrible.
But I can't really be mad. He's putting a lot of terrible, non-acting black actors in terrible non-funny sitcoms/formulaic dramas and giving them paychecks. It's not illegal.
I mean I would be lying if I said I hated his movies because they aren't really bad they've just been played out.
I mean I'm tired of this whole black movie formula anyway can we get some black people in some blockbuster movies. I mean Halle Berry can only do so much.
I won't lie. I enjoy his plays and his movies sometimes. However, I can see the stereotypes and repetitiveness throughout. But the funny thing is, when he does make a movie that has more substance, it gets horrible reviews, even by the black race. There are only a handful of people I know who enjoyed For Colored Girls, but they eat up his Madea plays and movies.
But not all of his movies are about the same thing-
Color Girls, A Family That Preys, Daddy Girls, Why Did I Get Married pt 1 and 2.
I saw where he was TRYING to go with "For Colored Girls" but it was your usual Tyler Perry melodrama with some good poetry interwoven into the story.
As for the other films, their all your usual Tyler Perry melodramatic soaps, with heavy-handed drama, one-dimensional characters, overacting, the message of Christianity shoved downed the viewers' throats, they were just all around ****** films.
Congrats to Tyler. This man went from being homeless to one of highest paid men in Hollywood.
I think Spike Lee and Tyler Perry are both good film makers and what they do and what they look to promote. The critical comments that Spike is making for the media to run with is so unnecessary and it does creates unnecessary tension that is not needed. If Spike has such an issue with what Tyler is representing or portraying in his films, how about having a sit down behind closed doors? Maybe at that point, they would be a meeting of great minds where together concepts could be created for more production of well fitted black movies. The bickering and going back and forth is very catty and it lacks the intelligence I know Spike has. There is room for Tyler, Spike, and other black directors. In fact, we need MORE black directors and producers with various view points.
Regardless of what you think of a film, there are people that can identify with both sets of film. BUT it is a good point to be made that many black actresses/actors/production team would not have a job if it were not for his films. Spike Lee should be upset that there aren't more opportunities to be in the position that Tyler Perry is in.
I mean I would be lying if I said I hated his movies because they aren't really bad they've just been played out.

Sis, not even Halle is doing blockbuster flicks.
The industry has totally thrown black thespians to the wayside.
