The premiere of Fox's The X Factor on Wednesday night was peculiar when it came to the judges' table – featuring segments with both Cheryl Cole and Nicole Scherzinger, even though Scherzinger replaced Cole months ago.

Cole, 28, was dismissed from the singing show in May, many weeks after filming began, but the show aired some of her judging anyway during its premiere, giving viewers a chance to compare the two. And some critics are wondering if Simon Cowell made the right choice by switching.

"[Cole] just kind of disappears midshow, without much explanation, and suddenly Nicole Scherzinger of Pussycat Dolls is in her chair. It's a downgrade," Neil Genzlinger writes in The New York Times.

"What was wrong with Cheryl Cole?" adds Rick Porter in the Los Angeles Times. "She seemed perfectly at ease with the other judges – and perfectly easy to understand."

Cowell, 51, said on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight this week that Cole "looked a bit bewildered" during the tapings.

"I took the view, along with a few other people, that she would have been more comfortable back in the U.K.," said Cowell. "That's what you have to do when you produce – you have to make decisions in the moment, and I take full responsibility for it."

Scherzinger, 33, who also appeared on the CNN show, said of Cole: "I didn't actually get to work with her that much. I obviously think she's a gorgeous girl and very charming."

This shouldn't be a "who do you like better" type poll... because there's far too much bias in that. Maybe we'll get Cheryl for Season 2, though... Or perhaps she'll assist Simon in the Judge's Homes round. :]

Nicole. She had sense and didn't give such simple and vague comments. I wanted Cheryl to be on since she was announced but after last night, it's fair to say Nicole is the most deserving.

I don't see what the big deal is. Nicole S. is very familiar with the process, critique and stress of a talent show assembled to discover the next big superstar. To me, Nicole seemed to fit right in with the other judges and they have a chemistry among them that was missing with Cheryl. It's not to say that Cheryl is bad or anything.

I wonder would anyone care if either of them fell in a hole.
Chery was greatly missed from the first show.
Nicole can't catch a break with the media yet her skin still glows.

Cheryl was on the UK version of x factor, she's more familiar with all that stuff than nicole.

Nicole was a flop judge, just like how everything she does is a flop. She came off so desperate, like when it was her birthday and she kept mentioning it on the show.

How so? Girls Aloud were formed during a talent show Popstars back in 2002, which they had won.

I'm so happy they are slamming Nicole as much as they are slamming Simon.

Sometimes I wonder if this was Simons plan. To make Cheryl the mysterious, exciting underdog who got unfairly kicked off and everyone roots for. This could be the start of something big, he's a smart man.

Honestly, Nicole was so much better.
She showed waaaay more personality than Cheryl and had better chemistry with the other judges.
