We have paganism to thank for many modern traditions. The time of holidays and festivals were structured around pagan festival times because it was convenient.
The Christmas tree is a pagan tradition as are many other things. It is actually more worshiping of the Earth and the belief that anything growing or natural has a spirit more than anything else.
It was demonized by the church to further their own means but most of it was bollocks.
